Link to Google Drive for new files

There have apparently been some changes in Groups.io recently that are impacting this forum.? The free version of Groups.io has become more restrictive and I am currently unable to upload any new program files.?
Fortunately we are grandfathered in and can retain the "Files" section of the forum and any existing ones. For new ones, I can store them on Google Drive and post links in the Files section. So don't be alarmed when you don't see the actual exe file, but a link to Google Drive.

Sorry about this change, but the cost to provide features that we had a few months ago is now $240 per year and I can't afford that. The alternative might be to create my own web site.

For now, it appears that we can continue the forum. Hopefully no further restrictions will be imposed.

ED!? Have you thought about going out to us, the group members, for donations to cover the $240 per year cost?? This has worked well with other groups.? You could poll the group on this.? What think?

Hi Lou,
Thanks for the input. I sure don't want to have to be asking for donations - this is supposed to be a free forum, but I may have to do that. We currently have 353 members, so around $1 per member per year shouldn't break anybody. I think the actual cost is actually $220 per year, or $20 per month minimum.

There is a sponsorship option that can be opened for the forum to allow members to contribute. I need to check the fine print again, but I think once the "account" meets either the $20 monthly or $220 yearly, we are automatically upgraded to the next level which does provide the featuers we need.? But I'm not sure what hapens to the excess funds when we go over the threshold amount. I definitely don't want any funds coming back to me and I don't want members to contribute more than nexessary.

Under the new rules, the free version is just pretty much a mailing list and for new groups is limited to 100 members. But since we were formed before 2021, we are grandfathered in for now.

You could ask and see what they will do with the access.? I think they might apply it to next year's dues. But, you will need to double check on that.

I am sure that being able to upload files should be possible in this group
without needing to upgrade to premium. We're checking on that off-group.

Ed,

I just got back to email.

Did you check over the group's settings?

This would be under ADMIN, SETTINGS, FEATURES.

there's a "files" section with a check box for allow photos in files. Above that
check box, there's a drop-down list under "Permissions." Without clicking on the
down arrow, what does it say in that box? You don't want to see "Files are
disabled" there. Even if you did have that there, I think you would not see ANY
files or even be able to get to them, but I'm not absolutely certain on that. I
think as a group owner you'd see them. If you joined as a regular member with a
different email address, if files were turned off, you might not see anything to
suggest there are files.

Other than that possible place, I don't know why your group doesn't allow you to
upload files.

I suggest joining the group manager's forum to see if anyone there has something
else that might be the problem. The next step after that is to file a bug
report. I can help you with that if it comes to this. Paying $220 won't fix the
problem, though it would get you access to support since Mark often ignores
support requests from free groups.

I did check in my group and there definitely is a file upload button.

Donald

Yes I have checked settings and file uploads by administrator is enabled. I get the upload button and the box to drag & drop a new file. But when I click the ADD button after dropping the file, nothing happens.?
I did see a note in help that they don't respond to emails from owners of free plans. Per your suggestion I'll try to join the owners forum.

Donald, I just found that uploads are working from my laptop. Although I've been using my desktop for the past several years for uploading, something must have changed on it. I'll look into it tomorrow.

BTW I joined the owners forum, posted and got a reply from someone confirming that his free group uploads are working.

Well this is sure embarrassing. After learning that I could upload files
from my laptop, I found that with the desktop machine, if I left it alone
after hitting the "ADD" button to upload, it would actually do the upload,
but it took almost 15 minutes!

So I rebooted the machine, and it's working fine again. I should have
thought of that in the first place, but was blaming it on Groups.io.

Anyway, thanks for your help on this.

Are you using different browsers (or different versions of the same browser) on
the two PCs? Glad you got it partly sorted out anyway.

The other thing I just thought of is that you may be signing in from your laptop
with one account or email address and a different one from the desktop. That
happens more than you might think.

BTW I joined the owners forum, posted and got a reply from someone confirming that his free group uploads are working.
I just uploaded a test file in my free group. It's like your group, with file
and picture storage, formed before Feb 2022 when those features were no longer
available on new basic groups.

I went to your group and though I can browse the files, I am unable to upload
any. You probably have it set for only moderators being allowed to upload.

I'll share with you something that I do for both the group manager's forum and
the ham groups I belong to. I set up separate folders for misc. ham radio
groups, my ham-antennas group (it gets a lot of messages sometimes), my CHIRP
group, my Baofeng group, etc., and also for the GMF (group manager's forum).
Then I set up email filters to divert messages into the appropriate folders so
my inbox isn't flooded with group posts. That way, I can get to the group posts
whenever it's convenient but I can look at my important messages in my inbox
quickly.

I find it convenient to do that. Once you learn how to do it, it's not
difficult. It can be done with most web mail providers as well as email through
your internet provider. I read all my email in a separate, local email program
on my PC for convenience.
