Locked Review NEW Baofeng MP31 HT's 4
Just how do I say everything and keep it short.. 2 thumbs up.. 2 HT's (Handy Talkie-ham slang) for under $30. OK you can quit reading .....or..... I can hear the ham-GMRS speak now-- 2 HT's for under $30... KIDDY COMMS... NOPE- But before I write more, a bit of a history lession. Remember the FCC? Remember they introduced FRS- Family Radio Service? 1/2 watt, fixed non removable antenna (usually about 3 inches) and some GMRS frequencies. No repeaters.. Then the FCC revised the rules because companies were marketing FRS-GMRS radios. 1/2 watt for FRS or 5 watts for GMRS. Well the FCC put a stop to that. they banned GMRS/FRS combo radio's.. About that same time, the FCC changed the rules to let some FRS channels to be able to use 2 watts.. That brings us to today and the Baofeng GM31. The GM31's are sold in a 2 pack. Under $30. They are 2 watts, except only 1/2 watt channels 8-14 (FCC rules). They have 16 repeater frequencies. You can ONLY speak on repeater frequencies if there is a repeater on the other end and have permission to use it. They can monitor NOAA weather, Plus scan all 38 channels. The antenna is removable, and uses a SMA connector. meaning you can connect a larger antenna to them. The battery can be charged via any USB-C cable. Each radio comes with a earphone-mic jack. It has VOX (Voice operated X(trans)mitting). There is a standard Kenwood speaker-mic connection on the side that also doubles for use with the programming cable (not supplied) Programming allows setting squelch, VOX gain, 50 CTCSS and 210 DCS codes for privacy.. Common functions, can be accessed with on-off, up down buttons The only variable control is volume. The radio speaks, it's channel number, so no display is used. There is a green signal-red transmit light, the Battery has a USB-C connector and a red charging- green fully charged light. Recharging takes 4-6 hours. The manufacturer claims maximum use 18 hours monitoring. So these will get you through a 8 hour shift easy. Now before you POO-POO the radio only being 2 watts; any other HT rated at 5 watts is heavier and more expensive. Yet 2 watts is a barely detectable by ear.. Sure, it can be measured and compared with lab quality test equipment, but you can;t hear it most times. Here in rural Kansas I can go 8-10 miles.. You can't do that in New Your City.even with the 5 watt hand helds. A GMRS license is $35 for a 10 year period. and allows your entire family to operate under your callsign. No test is required. That is perfect for family relations named Daryl, Daryl and Larry.. you just need to teach them, "to talk, push the button, To listen you just listen". As a commercial radio-telephone licensed operator and also an Amateur Radio operator and certified examiner; these radio's are great for daily family business use as long FCC rules and regulations are not violated. Things like shopping sprees, calling the family in for dinner, and so on. Hunting, camping and fishing. Even going into a rest stop on a family trip.. You never know when to call for help. Many of other licensed services are listening to Channel 3.. It's all described at :https://amrron.com You MUST have a license to operate GMRS or Amateur Radio. FRS and CB are licensed free. GMRS stations can talk to FRS and versa visa, It behooves everyone especially in this age to have a pair or two ready for an emergency. Cellphone service goes down when a tornado blows through or the government turns of cellphone service like 1/6 at the DC mall. Emergency communications is in place and this is your gateway. These will not break the bank and are excellent starter radio's. After being licensed for 57 years and have thousands of dollars worth of radio's, towers, and accessories, I find these will be my go to GMRS especially when I need communications with friends and family locally. This will also be published on Blind Hams@ groups.io and FACEBOOK GMRS room. Larry W8LM

Locked Veterans Day special event
From: The American Legion <legion@...> Sent: Friday, November 6, 2020, 12:34:27 PM CST Subject: Veterans Day special event On Wednesday, Nov. 11, the 2020 Veterans Day Special Event operations will be hosted by K9TAL with assistance from stations around the country. NOVEMBER 2020 Americans of all political views have reasons to celebrate the 2020 elections. A record number of Americans cast their votes, and even with the expected future challenges, lawsuits, and recounts in multiple states an eventual president will be named and our great system of government will continue. Seats in both the House and Senate have also changed hands in accordance with the will of the people. This being the year 2020, all these events seemed fraught with peril and danger〞even grave constitutional crisis, as some have described them. But elections and even the expected recounts simply reflect the completely normal functions of our great system of government, which over time is self-correcting. There are great constitutional checks and balances and if we happen to agree or disagree with the current situation, just wait a few years. Life goes on. No matter your candidate, the fact that you voted and had a say in the outcome is itself affirming. The year 2020 may have thrown many stones at us, but we voted and we will survive to vote another day. Especially since just one of those stones, called Asteroid 2018VP1 (the so-called ※Election Day§ asteroid), had the good sense to miss destroying the Earth before we could cast our votes. This deep space rock was headed our way at 25,000 miles per hour and had a 0.41% chance of entering our atmosphere late on November 2. Nabisco*s Oreo Cookies had anticipated a potential disaster and established, near the Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, Norway, the Global Oreo Vault. Several crates of Oreo cookies, along with some milk, were packaged in Mylar, which can protect them in temperatures from -80 degrees to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The treats were then locked in a special vault located safely above the Arctic Circle. Good news. As it turned out, the Election Day asteroid did not even touch our atmosphere at all. And even if it did, according to NASA, it was too small to do any harm and would have vaporized instantly in the upper atmosphere. NASA*s announcement was also good news〞good news indeed. And here*s some more good news: New digital WIRES-X net now in operation TALARC member Everett WA3DVO has notified National Headquarters that American Legion Amateur Radio Club N3TAL out of Post 275 in Glenarden, Md., has established a new monthly net to help fill in on Saturdays. The net is on WIRES-X and is conducted on the fourth Saturday of each month at noon Eastern time. They can be found on WIRES-X Room: ※Post 275.§ Those of you with WIRES-X capability are encouraged to take part in this new national net. Veterans Day Special Event On Wednesday, Nov. 11, the 2020 Veterans Day Special Event operations will be hosted by K9TAL with assistance from stations around the country. Stations will operate from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. EST [1800Z to 2359Z], using the call signs N9V, N9V-2, N9V-3 and N9V-4. Stations will alternate Control Station responsibilities: 40m stations will operate from the Legion*s National Headquarters in Indianapolis [N9V/K9TAL] and from Trappe, Md. [N9V-4/K3EMD]. 20m stations will operate from Dell Rapids, S.D. [N9V-2/KI?CW] and from Glenarden, Md. [N9V-3/N3TAL]. To accommodate almost all our members, there are several communications modes to choose from including HF, VHF, IRLP and EchoLink. To contact Special Event stations, tune to 7.225 MHz (+/- 5 KHz); or to 14.275 MHz (+/- 5 KHz); or to the 2m K9IP Repeater, 147.315, at Indianapolis; or to IRLP Node 9735; or to the EchoLink *CROSSRDS* Conference node. Any ham radio operators who contact the stations are eligible to receive a QSL card and a commemorative certificate to document their participation. Let the TALARC board of officers be the first to wish you a happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe and protect yourself as we enter cold and flu season and th

Locked Yaesu Fusion Repeater progress report..
I have been dealing with people including Yaesu USA's manager - John Kruk on Yaesu [email protected]. I keep running into erroneous statements and well, my diatribe is attached as it covers advances, setbacks and future direction. Here is my diatribe and will bring everyone up to date. I bought the VERTEX's back from the Dead.. I am but one person. I will be needing some testers to shake things down. I am not going to play integrating these new repeaters at the VFW. Just driving from Mulvane is over 1/2 hour each way. Plus there are times I can work on the repeaters when the VFW is closed. Here is my diatribe: On Thu, Nov 5, 2020 at 04:23 PM, John Kruk wrote: 1. The DR-2X is not designed to take DTMF codes via Fusion mode for control.- That statement is contrary to the DR2X/DR-2XE Operating manual Page 26: 11. Remote Controls Setting the remote control? Remote control of the DR-2X/DR-2XE repeater can be performed in either C4FM digital mode or analog FM mode. Yes, The person you're wondering about it, indeed me. I have been set back by Eye area Surgery, because of resulting Ramsey-Hunt.syndrome a manifestation of Shingles/ Chicken pox as a kid. Fortunately I did not loose my hearing. Surgery was complicated because I have 13 screws in my face around the eye socket and cheek from an aluminum ladder collapsing under me years ago. Additional nasal surgery is required but I'm holding off. I'm not fine with a chisel hammered up my nose. Unlike east and west coast, our only source for electronic parts to build anything is a Radio Shack. Last visit I was looking for 6.8uf and 2.2uf to build a low pass filter to inject a clean PL tone into the DR2X using a Arduino nano to produce the PL tone. They did not have them except at 450VDC. Any time parts are needed, it means mail order.. Mouser-Digikey-Newark and at least $8.95 shipping and a wait. Since we 1st contacted Yaesu Sales and inquired if the DR2X could be used on ALLSTAR, Prior to club purchase we were told: 1. NO PROBLEM. 2. It's done all the time. 3. We can tell you how it's done. The reality is- Our requests for that information rendered a type written 2 page overview. NO schematic, No Parts List, No specific point to point wiring and when calling Yaesu Tech Support- the answer is- We can't support any NON-Yaesu accessories attached to our products. We have 2 VERTEX VRX7000 repeaters running DMK URIx using a RJ45 connectors to DB25. 4 active wires, plus grounds. Then USB to a Raspberry Pi2 and operating just great. The reason for their replacement is VERTEX was bought by MOTOROLA and my opinion, killed it 2-3 years ago to eliminate competition. Our last repair required jumpering burned traces on the controller card.and substitution parts. A Resurrection- as End of life is pretty final. The interface- integration is a work in Progress. Because not a single component was specified, nor any wiring diagram exists. Anything documented in Internet-Land like the MABEL is a Kluge, and I see why. They made it work by, for instance having to sample RF output. Say what??? Their Kluge keeps the Analog/Analog or Digital/Digital switching based on input working correctly. It works because, it's a work around. In our case- in Fly over country Kansas and During SKYWARN weather events we want everyone to be able to talk to everyone. So our intent is to AMS(Auto mode Selection) the receiver and used Fixed ANALOG transmit. No one monitors a frequency with digital traffic on it and an analog only radio. Our mission is to serve all..Poor or rich, veteran or not..We have area hams that only own a $25 HT and rely on using our club HF station for DXing. We have hams that only are on the air during weather events. and cannot justify a $400 digital radio. Our 1st integration attempt, using a CT-175 cable and a DINAH, it worked fine, but after a few days we found the DR2X locked up. No touch screen response. The Display indicated Auto receive. The Fixed Transmit jumped from Analog to Digital.. Only a Factory reset restores it. We repeated with adding grounds and ferrites, same outcome. Since the rep

He lives only 12-15 miles from my place in the Seacoast of New Hampshire. We've known each other 30-40 years. -Larry The press release is below, and the photo, supplied by ARRL, is attached. == Vy 73, AI2Q, Alex ============================================================= NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS FROM THE NEW ENGLAND RADIO DISCUSSION SOCIETY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 2020 PHOTO: attached Editors, for additional information please contact: Alex Mendelsohn -or - Tom Moyer Students to Contact the International Space Station Students at Kennebunk*s Sea Road elementary school are getting ready to talk directly with astronauts aboard the orbiting International Space Station (ISS). The Sea Road School serves over 300 third, fourth, and fifth-grade students. For its part, the New England Radio Discussion Society, a Maine radio club comprised of Federally-licensed Radio Amateurs, known as ham radio operators, is assisting in planning the event. Ham radio is a popular public service hobby that brings people, electronics, and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, and into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. The idea of a contact was proposed to school principal Cory Steere in the summer of 2018. Subsequently, Ann Stockbridge, a STEM Technician at the school, submitted a formal proposal to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Notably, many schools around the country submitted proposals, but only a few were approved by NASA. NASA indicates the direct radio contact will take place in January of 2021. Plans are now underway to establish a reliable connection between student microphones and Web cameras and the ham radio link to the orbiting space station. Many of the astronauts are licensed Radio Amateurs. MORE: Information about Amateur Radio can be found on the Web here: http://www.arrl.org/what-is-ham-radio eof __,_._,_ ._,_._,_

Locked NPRM filing Instructions - Proposed application fees for Radio Amateurs 2
Comments are being accepted on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in MD Docket 20-270, which proposes application fees for radio amateurs. Formal deadlines for comments and reply comments will be determined once the NPRM appears in the Federal Register. Comments may be filed now, however, by using the FCC's Electronic Comment Filing System ( <https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings> ECFS), posting to MD Docket No. 20-270. The docket is already open for accepting comments, even though deadlines have not yet been set. Here is the link to file your comments (copy and paste in your browser): https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express * In the first box type, "20-270", then select the "Amendment of the Schedule of Application Fees...." * Then fill out the remainder and submit. It won't immediately show up, it has to be reviewed first..mine showed up this morning. Here are the comments WB4OMM submitted an an example: "I strenuously implore the FCC to drop this fee initiative for Amateur Radio License Applications and Renewals. Amateur Radio Operators provide VOLUNTARY COMMUNITY SERVICES. VOLUNTEER Examiners, SKYWARN, ARES, RACES, and CERT are all VOLUNTARY groups and services. Even the title, "AMATEUR" denotes VOLUNTEER service (non-paid). I see this fee as a huge barrier to youth (Boy and Girl Scouts, High School, Elementary Students) at a minimum; I see it as a, "slap in the face" to folks who provide volunteer community services. If you need funding, raise the fees of the commercial license holders who profit from the license. Thank you for the opportunity to provide comments." If you provide comments, make them your own...there are over 300 comments on the site against this NPRM as of today, but obviously the more the better. No nastiness, "just say no!".

Locked Route 66 On The Air
View this email in your browser Route 66 On The Air is a great way to celebrate the "The Mother Road" on the airwaves. There are two ways to participate in this event. You can stay at your home station and work as many W6? stations as you can. These stations are operating from on or near Rt 66. This event runs from September 12 through 20 and all of the information can be found on the Route 66 On The Air website. Or, you can work as the Oklahoma City (W6K) station and make connections around the world from Rt. 66. OKC has always been well represented and they'd love your help. The following are the instructions from Thomas Webb WA9AFM/5 on getting set up as a W6K operator. 73 Just under one week to go before Route 66 On The Air begins!!! Once again, we'll celebrate the legend and lore of Route 66, "The Mother Road". Oklahoma City will again use the special event call sign W6K; Steve Duskin, NE5SD is the trustee for the call sign. Use of W6K must be authorized by the trustee through the R66OTA Registration Page. All W6K operations should be conducted in the Oklahoma City Metro area including Norman, and in the spirit of the event, as close to Route 66 as practical. Operations from Oklahoma City area landmarks associated with Route 66 are encouraged, i.e. Cowboy Hall of Fame, the 'round barn' in Arcadia, the Route 66 Bridges west of Bethany, etc. Mobile operations along Route 66 are also encouraged. Formal coordination with the Oklahoma History Center and the Museum of Western Heritage/Cowboy Hall of Fame has been completed. Mobile units may operate from the parking lots at both locations during their operating hours. For the Oklahoma History Center, Monday-Saturday, 10 AM. to 5 PM. For the Cowboy Hall of Fame, Monday-Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM; Sunday, 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Please note: permission has been granted only for exterior operations only, NO permission has been granted for operations inside these locations. For R66OTA contacts in the Oklahoma City area, the 146.82MHz and 147.135MHz repeaters have been designated 'R66OTA repeaters'. Stations may reserve '2m FM' operating slots and use W6K on these repeaters. R66OTA began at 0000Z/7 September and continues to 2359Z/15 September. Radio operators may use phone, CW, or digital. Radio operators may also consider operating mobile on "The Mother Road". QSL information is provided in the registration instructions. To sign up as a R66OTA Radio Operator for Oklahoma City, contact Dave Downing, WD5G (davedown@...), Duane Angles, AA5KD (dangles1@...), Steve Duskin, NE5SD (ne5sd.steve@...) or Tom Webb, WA9AFM/5 (wa9afm@...). You will be assigned a username (your call sign) and password to access the R66OTA Registration Page. Besides your name and call sign, please provide a phone and email point of contact in case we need to get in touch with you. Operating slot reservation instructions will be sent to you after you have been registered as a R66OTA radio operator. You can 'reserve' two-hour operating slots by day/time/band/mode. Sign up for as many slots as you can operate. If you sign up to operate, please honor your commitment and operate for the time slots for which you register. Locked W?VFW/R 145.27 Repeater- operating Information.. 4
THIS IS NOT TO BE TALKED ABOUT ON THE AIR..... It has come to my attention that late night the BLIND HAMS TALK GROUP is being jammed. This is what we know: #1. The jammer is accessing the group via DMR. #2. The jammer is changing his radio's DMR address. #3. The jammer is operating late at night. Since our VHF repeater is connected 24x7 to the Blind Hams Group and we wish to continue at this time; we are not going to disconnect. Except or unless we create the issue. During nets, our repeater squelch tail will continue with a digital signal then drop. Only during Nets, it is coming from a digital HT on our input. I have never heard it on the input at my location but have hear it on the input at the repeater, ONLY during Nets. How I wished the repeater has a signal strength meter. I only heard it once on Patricia's net last week. The BLIND HAMS group is not interested in our little "burps" but instead this above mentioned jammer.. So as of today, the Blind Hams group is turning off DMR access in the evenings, as this is when the jammer comes out to play. THEY ARE NOT ANNOUNCING THIS !! So If anyone tries to access us via DMR 10PM to 4AM nightly it will be a NO GO.. ALLSTAR will work as it should and be available 24x7. They are also working on better authentication of DMR access on their end. Again THIS IS NOT TO BE TALKED ABOUT ON THE AIR.....
