Looking at the photos and specs, they had
Cast iron BD200 models, Black Crinkle paint
Cast Iron BD200 "? ? ? ? ? ?,? Hammered Blue
? ? ? ?BD200? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Hammered Green, looks to be a lighter green
And the SL models with their darker Hammered green, But I have one that was also in the Hammered Grey ( Blue)
And I have seen the SL1000 With the Hammered Green that had a slight yellow tint to them and I have seen them with a slight blue tint.
Age and exposure to light can change the colors, long term exposure to flourescent light bleaches the color away.

?Unimat also came in a gray color, I have the head stock of one in that color, it was a red badged SL. The much sought after Rust-o-leum Paint is not a exact match, I have used it for many years. The color on the cap a very close match. But it is slightly lighter and does not have the courser texture that the original paint had. Maybe if you really built it up you might get close to the OEM finish, But I would bet that you would use up nearly a full can to get to that point. I have some photos of some drawers that I painted it and you can see the difference. A few decades ago there was a person online who sold every unimat part that they had and he has on his site a photo of every part, I have that saved some where and I think that you can still find it with the Way Back Machine. I think that he went to college and shut his site down a couple of decades ago. There is a difference in a factory spray job done with commercial spray guns vs a rattle can. I looked up Hammered paint years ago and bought a bunch of 1/2 pint cans at a close out once, The problem is that it uses some stuff that is harder to get in a paint anymore, stuff like Toulene.?

Can we stay with the subject of paint and all of us try to contribute photos, or should we just drop the subject?

Ok,? here are photos of four different SL's. Note one has a Grey Headstock and also note that on one the motor color in difference, a little lighter and that is the motor that came with it. That lighter color is closer to the Rust-o-leum Rosemary. You could also ask for photos of the accessories, because they were painted the same as the lathes.

John, you don't know me and I don't know you, but you're to fast with conclusions.
I jumped into action and the 2 unimat's in original paint went for the studio to make color neutral photo's.

You want to preserve the original Unimat color's, but strange enough you don't want to hear about an accurate way to do it.....!?

Your green looks to be the lighter one, it almost looks to have a touch of yellow in it in the top photo. I have that same color on the motor of one of mine. But I also have one lathe that is a slightly darker green. The Rosemary looks to be closer to the lighter color. I am not sure that over the life span of the factory production run that the color was exactly the same . Another thing, in many decades, I have never seen a can of factory touch up paint or a link to who the paint manufacturer was, the paint color name other then 'Hammered Grey or Green". We may be chasing a ghost trying to find the exact match paint. Going years back, anyone who used the Rust-o-leum Rosemary Hammered paint, did not use it touch up a lathe, but rather used it to do a total paint job. My brother owned a sign shop for decades and he was a paint specialist by trade. I asked him years ago about matching the unimat paint, he laughed and said he easily could mix and match the color using Sign Painters "One Shot" brand enamal sign paint. But he said the "hammered"? texture was something special and I would have to go to Industrial paint store like Sherwin Williams because of the Stuff that they used to get the texture.
?Here is a link to the Rust-0-leum Material Safety Data Sheet for the Hammered paint. And be aware that this is for the new stuff, the? paint used 50 years ago would have had some nasty stuff in it. Some of the old Hammered cans of paint that I have, not aerosols either recommend using Tylene/Toulene as a thinner.

Here are 3 of my Unimats.? The 2 on the right are all original paint.? The one on the left is one I refinished.? On that one I originally repainted it with Verde Green rustolium, but it didn't come close to matching the motor which is still original paint.? I redid it with Rosemary Rustolium which is very very close.? All 4 of my Unimats are slightly different shades, and none of them match each other.? Verde Green turned out to be the correct color for my Wilton Bullet machinists Vise.

I've posted this solution previously: ?

Sherwin Williams Industrial paint stores will MATCH the Unimat color in Hammer-Tone finishes. ?This is the REAL DEAL, in that it's truly machine paint. ? Years past, they'd sell as little as a pint of the matched paint, but I THINK, they've raised it to a quart. They also have an excellent machine primer, which really helps prevent chipping. ?I've refinished perhaps 20 Unimats using their matched colors, I have THREE different colors, which are indicative of the change in the colors over the years. ?ALL my painting supplies are in a warehouse at present, so I can't offer any additional detail. ?When I restore a Unimat, I use the most representative paint found on the project and spray it on with a finishing spray gun or sometimes an air brush. ?I ALWAYS USE A PRIMER, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE CLAIMED FEATURE OF "NO PRIMER REQUIRED". ?Trust me, it improves the durability.

Best of luck with your projects. ?

BTW, I hope to extract all my Unimat stuff from the warehouse over the next 2 months. ?I'll have no less than 1 dozen machines for sale. ?Watch this space...

Steve Jaynes, My local commercial store would not give me a hammered finished in a spray can.? Did you get your pints in can with a lid?
Can you tell me which formula you purchased?? I think everything is switching to water based paint.

I wish we could get rustoleum to color match this for us.

Thanks,

Tamra

Steve Jaynes, when I posted the question in response to your email on March 25 regarding formula, did you purchase an enamel / oil based machine paint with Primer, or did you purchase a water based paint?

Thanks - Tamra

I am in NJ.? I just called 2 Sherwin Williams commercial paint stores.? They are unable to provide any tinted color of hammered paint.? Rustoleum has told me that their hammered paint cannot be tinted to match something.
Every time we discuss this, there are always individuals who basically say that their local friendly paint store was able to make them a Unimat green.? But we never have any specifics as to who will mix this paint currently, or even which paint and which tint(s) were used.? This may be a case of alligators living in the sewer.??

?It may also be a case of having a good store staffed with experienced people who do not mind taking the time to help a customer vs a under staffed or staffed with new people who do not know how to or are willing to that the time.. I have had on store tell me no we do not do that and then have another store, same brand, tell they can. Shop around. I would suggest not calling but going in and talking to the person actually mixes the paint for the store and seeing what they have to say.

I am not driving all over NJ and PA to interview paint stores.? So far, 4 commercial SW, including one in person, have said that they cannot do it.? Again the story is that somehow this local friendly paint store does the job.? If this is the case, someone can tell me take Rustoleum Hammered Silver, add a certain proportion of specific tint(s), and that will be the color.? So far, in all of this talk, no one has identified the magic formula? ?if I go to the hardware store for Benjamin Moore wall paint, they will mix certain colors to get a specific green.? The can label tells me what.? Go and look at the SW site, and you can find a huge number of paints that they can mix.? ?
What do we have for our Unimats hammered paint?? Nothing.?

?If you go back and read the replies, you will note that one thing stands out, They people who have more then one Unimat all noted that the color does vary a bit between units. I have seen this many times, it can vary from a slight yellow to a slight blue tint in it.? So that means that you are not going to be able to do a touch up. But you will have to total repaint. So who cares if the color is not a "exact" match. I doubt the factory did a "exact" match through all of the years of production. Get something close or paint it what color you like and enjoy it. The Golden Grail Rust-o-leum paint is very close on a couple of my Unimats and not so close on two others. So at best you can only hope to match it to the lathe that you have.?
?The OEM paint used some nasty stuff in it. The Rust-o-leum also used some nasty stuff. Stuff that is getting harder and harder to find. SW is probably fading out using paint with Toulene in it, just like it is getting harder to find real oil based enamels.? If that is the case they you will have to find a old store with a old experienced paint mixer to make it for you.?
?Take time to search the web for Hammered paint, there are options out, they are not cheap or fast. But there are many posts about it. You may have to mix up a lot of paint before you can get what you want, but it can be done. Have you contacted a Sign Shop, they tend to be experts on matching paint colors.

SW and Benjamin Moore both can mix Rosemary green. How about asking them what color and what percent is going into the mix and then checking to see what Rust-oLeum has in Hammer colors and see if you can mix it yourself. How about try lightening up the Rust-oleum Dark green with a little bit of their silver hammered paint?
