Well that looks pretty good. If you were only concerned with drilling, you could miss out the feed screw,? and it would be possible to modify an original Unimat part. It could still be used for milling - just not so sophisticated. Along with many such ideas, the more difficult bit is cutting the keyway in the column. That would need a modest size mill.

?There is a guy in the il making parts for the unimat SL and the unimat 3, including a milling column. I have the one for the SL and i am reasonably happy with it.

I also have the mounting base.?

Jewelers Loupe Head Band?

I am considering purchasing a Jewelers magnifier head band. That being said, what is the best type to have for for use with the Unimat? I have used the Optivisor head band and also the type that fits on your your glasses and pivots up when not needed. I think this is my favorite due to light weight.

Does it matter what can or cannot be found online for something that no longer exists?
Can someone here specify what these units actually cost and when.? I assume that some members in this group must have purchased them.? Also, when I had suggested adapting a Sherline column, there was complaining about the $181 price.? Did these other units cost twice this more than 10 years ago?? Can members here submit their photos of what they are using for a vertical application.

The Heminway Kits, UPVLA (and maybe others) never gained much momentum.
Even with a high market price there was demand for them but in both cases a limited number were made.
It has proven all but impossible to find usable traces of them on the web. eg: flyers or instruction sheets.

Why not ask your local optician? I had good advice from mine when renewing safety glasses (nearly half a century old and originally for laboratory work but also appropriate for small scale machine tool work).

Re: Off topic - magnifying glasses

As a die-hard cheapskate I followed the example of a guy on the UK tv show ‘The Repair Shop’ and wear multiple sets of glasses when I need better close up vision… you are just adding diopters after all.
?
I have glasses for ‘normal’ vision and ‘reading’, and using them together is a good ‘starter’ combination.
?
Cheap plastic glasses are readily available from pound shops and the like. A couple of ‘strong’ ones will give really close-up vision for soldering etc.
?
Probably nowhere near as good as the professional brand discussed above, but maybe a workable alternative, a fraction of the price, easily stored, and readily replaced or ‘upgraded’.

I also agree that getting Optivisors is well worth the investment as they are quite well made and last.? ?The “sizes“ that are shown are in Diopters, so be aware that each size has a different working focal length ranges.? If you want more magnification you will have to hold the object to be magnified closer to your face.? There is a table on the Optivisor web page that shows this information along with the different models and accessories.? I use a #3 most of the time.? The Optivisor lenses are glass, so they will not scratch easily like the cheaper plastic lenses.

I can second that ! I have visors in sizes 3, 5 and 7.?

3 is good for general work. Can use whilst using a soldering iron and pliers without risking getting burn't.

5 for examination of a small item.

7 for looking at surface defects etc (I use mine for looking at solder bridges on surface mount devices).

?

I do have the lenses for a size 10 magnification but that is just "silly" for most uses and I don't keep them installed in a visor.

?

I wouldn't use a size 2 magnification for myself.....but there again I'm old and need bi-focals just to get around. My bi-focals close range work well for lathe work, so perhaps that might equate to a size 2 for other folks.

Hello Dave,

Having tried many, and in my opinion the Donegan Optivisor is by far the best and worth the money. There are much cheaper “knock offs” but the lens quality is no-where near that of the real Donegan product.

They sell for between $120-150 AUD on line.

Best regards,

Trevor

Ha ha.? Didn’t at all mean it that way.? But from a learning metal work perspective one of the best things that ever happened to me was discovering David 骋颈苍驳别谤测’蝉 “Build a metal shop from scrap” series.? Charcoal foundry, scrap metal and so I made the propane gas fired version that came later in the series and build his son’s power hack saw and slip roll using those two tools to cut and form the metal for the foundry.

?

? My drill press had a hole drilled down the middle of the spindle by a friend with a lathe and from there I had a draw bar to hold MT-3 tools and could mill castings.? The end result the Gingery Lathe but not with gears since that required building his milling machine and shaper projects.?

?

Instead I designed and build an electronic lead screw.? And I have that with both axis controlled on the Gingery Lathe and the Z axis on the South Bend Heavy 10L.?

?

I was going to install it on the DB-200 too after I put it on a friend’s Sherline but so many other projects including a knee mill that now runs LinuxCNC took over.? Maybe one day.

I think not, at least not comfortaby enough to make it worthwhile for permanent use as both on the U3 and on the Unimat mill table, space to move around is at a premium and things get clumsy very fast.

I have a dial indicator stand like that one and I use it very little, having had to resort to alternative methods to hold them.
