Cabin Fever Friday & Saturday
开云体育Hi Peter: It hasn't been too dangerous to my wallet in the past. Mostly bargains: working resistance solder machine for a dollar, a small lathe (that I gave to our local maker group), flexible magnetic base for a good price. Some free items: scrap materials from the trash cans including a cubic foot of 1/8" Plexiglas sheets. And to off-set spending, one time I took a load of my junk to sell, came back with a nice check. The best room is the auction clearance room where I've never paid what I should have paid! Carl. On 1/11/2025 1:51 AM, Peter Brooks via

All my measurements are in inches. So one revolution of my lead screw equals.050”
That is because I installed an inch leadscrew. No more manual conversion.

0.040 when making back-of-the-envelope calculations, but that rounding error will compound over the length of the leadscrew. So 40 graduations will not give an accurate Imperial measurement. Even a single turn of the leadscrew will leave you 0.00063 thou off. That's over half a thou off with only a single turn. For accurate Imperial measurement set up a dial indicator. Re: Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
To maybe return this topic to something about machining, Unimat vertical columns were being discussed.? I happened to get an Email with a Harbor Freight coupon for 15% off anything.? If you need a HF item, you should look.? Consider then that their small benchtop mill/drill goes from $730 to $620.? I missed the Sherline December coupon for 20% off mills.? I point these out that it may be worthwhile to consider Unimat milling alternatives.
Now some may say that they have no room, but that is another topic. |

10 spaces equal 1.1°.
See it at Cabin Fever next week! Who
else will be there?

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
If you are making your own, an old hack from the Gingery series is to get a very thin metric measuring tape, like the pocket ones that are about 1/4" wide. Turn a dial to the correct diameter for that circumference and stick it on. Cut a 100mm section out of it.? Turn a dial to the correct diameter (about 1.254") and you get 100 divisions.? 50 divisions is 0.626" diameter for 1/4-20 or 1/2-20. 40 divisions is 0.5015" diameter for 1mm screws. after sticking it on some guys add a couple tiny round head screws to tack down the seam so it doesn't begin to unstick. Amazon has a bunch of self adhesive narrow metric and english tapes.? Might be able to heat shrink a clear plastic ring over it. good luck On Fri, Jan 10, 2025 at 10:49?AM Bill in OKC too via <wmrmeyers=[email protected]> wrote:

If you don’t want to make your own resettable dials you’re only other option as I see it is to purchase what you need.
It may be a challenge finding them right now due to the wild fires in California. In my situation I will make my own.

I think because they were talking about a supplier called The Little Machine Shop, which apparently is located in Pasadena, California (in the USA).

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
Yes, the Unimat is a metric machine, having a leadscrew of 1mm pitch.? The practice of 40 divisions is a carryover, saying that 1 division is .001.? 1 division is actually .03937".? So with a 50 division dial, 10=.2mm, 20=.4mm, 30=.6mm, 40=.8mm.? So the smallest division is .02mm, half a division is .01mm.? This is the system used by Sherline on all of their metric handwheels.? I am not trying to imagine the Unimat telling me inches. |
Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
开云体育Hello: Why 50 graduations? The lead screw is a 1mm pitch, or 0.040". Wouldn't 40 graduations be more useful? 1/50 would be 0.00078" while 1/40 would be 0.00098". Also I just
made a dial from white plastic with black inserts, looks great! Carl. On 1/10/2025 8:36 AM, OldToolmaker via

For my needs I will use a dial with 50 graduations as I use imperial measuring tools. I have been using this system all my life. No point in me changing now at my age.

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
I was able to spend some time on the Little Machine Shop website earlier today and found a dial and handwheel that are listed as replacement parts for some Micro Mills. The dial shown has 40 graduations and the hand wheel has no handle on it. There are no details as to how they work together but appear to be friction type. I called there for more details and they have a voice message saying the shop is closed due to the fires. As far as a 40-graduation dial goes, I could manage to use it on the cross feed because it does not travel a great distance. Most of the work I do is not that precise and will always need checked before it is finished. ?At best I consider myself "amateur" but am looking for a dial that I can re zero during the cut. At this point it looks like this modification will be a combination of purchased parts that will need to be specially fitted to the lathe. Thank You, Frank? ? |
Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
The 40 type is generally for us as amateur machinists who think inch to metric to inch concepts.
For my brain, with a Unimat, a 50 dial is a lot better.? 10 being .2m , 20-.4, and so on.
A pre-made graduated collar is a big help.? But what I don't want is to have to machine new dials at all.? I seem unable to get to all of the projects that I would like to do. |
Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
I thought it might be worth noting that the Little Machine Shop 40 divisions is meant to make a metric unit lathe emulate an English unit lathe. They use 1 mm screws (with the exception of the "true inch" mini-lathe version which has 20 tpi screws with 0.050" per turn wheels which I believe is sold exclusively by Micro-Mark). 1 mm is 0.0394".? That is pretty close to 0.040".? So, the 40 division markings are similarly "pretty close."? On the 7x12minilathe group, owners don't seem to complain and tend to say they measure for the final cuts anyway.? And the error is small.? In the case of a mini-mill, I would think things might be worse as sometimes you are traversing a long distance, and many turns of the wheel mean the error will add up. I saw one mini-lathe (perhaps not one of the Sieg manufactured ones but somebody else's) where the collars were marked in 39.4 divisions.? 39 equally spaced divisions where each really was 0.001" of movement and one last division that was smaller representing that 0.0004" from that 0.0394" value.? So those markings were honest, but confusing. Charles E. "Chuck" Kinzer
