Re: drilling small holes on a unimat
The first thing to get ahead is to make sure that your facing leaves as smooth a surface with the smallest "bump".
Next, have the right sizes of center drill.? For the tiny holes being mentioned, you

Re: drilling small holes on a unimat
It is tempting when wanting to get ahead to omit the centre drill stage, I
have done that in the past and regretted it.

Re: drilling small holes on a unimat
You can also get a small chuck (looks like a Dremel chuck) with a 3mm shank
and a cross hole that can be set up in the tailstock in a piece of round
with a 3 mm hole to also act as a fine feed chuck.

Re: drilling small holes on a unimat
Clock makers will put a pin in one end of a double ended pin vise and the
tiny drill in the other end of the pin vise, then pass the drill through a
plate with the drill size hole in it as a guide (on

Re: drilling small holes on a unimat
Note that the spec says drills down to 1/32". I use ER11 collets in the tailstock - they go down to 0.5 mm. However my smaller drills, down to 0.5 mm have a 3/32" (2.38 mm) shank. I have a smaller set

I have a Dremelesque coreless drill bought from Aldi and that has a 7mm

Another option for holding tiny drills is a pin chuck, held in a regular chuck. I have an Eclipse one, which I have used in a Unimat and also in a bench drill. Not as good as a collet chuck, but still

Re: drilling small holes on a unimat
For those tiny drill bits, #80, 79, 78 etc., here is what I do. The chucks on my SL are too big to hold the bits. I have a dremel motor tool. It has the collects which hold these small drill bits.

Re: drilling small holes on a unimat
I got mine at home depot. Should be on Amazon, too. Yes:? https://www.amazon.com/Dremel-4486-MultiPro-Keyless-Chuck/dp/B0000302ZV
Says it is for .008-1/8th inch, so might not work for some folks.
