Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
All my measurements are in inches. So one revolution of my lead screw equals.050¡± That is because I installed an inch leadscrew. No more manual conversion. Dick -- http://www.homemadetools.net/

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
One millimeter is 0.03937 inches. For convenience we usually round up to 0.040 when making back-of-the-envelope calculations, but that rounding error will compound over the length of the leadscrew. So

Hi Gang: Here is the white blank with black inserts: This is the vernier for a 7.5¡ã dial. So 10 spaces equal 1.1¡ã. See it at Cabin Fever next week! Who else will be there? Carl.

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
If you are making your own, an old hack from the Gingery series is to get a very thin metric measuring tape, like the pocket ones that are about 1/4" wide. Turn a dial to the correct diameter for that

Little Machine Shop is located in Pasadena. And even the parts of the county not on fire currently are probably over-run with refugees. I grew up out that way, and the population has about doubled

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
Yes, the Unimat is a metric machine, having a leadscrew of 1mm pitch.? The practice of 40 divisions is a carryover, saying that 1 division is .001.? 1 division is actually .03937".? So with a 50

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
Hello: Why 50 graduations? The lead screw is a 1mm pitch, or 0.040". Wouldn't 40 graduations be more useful? 1/50 would be 0.00078" while 1/40 would be 0.00098". Also I just made a dial from white

I think because they were talking about a supplier called The Little Machine Shop, which apparently is located in Pasadena, California (in the USA).

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
For my needs I will use a dial with 50 graduations as I use imperial measuring tools. I have been using this system all my life. No point in me changing now at my age. -- http://www.homemadetools.net/

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials
The 40 type is generally for us as amateur machinists who think inch to metric to inch concepts. For my brain, with a Unimat, a 50 dial is a lot better.? 10 being .2m , 20-.4, and so on. A pre-made
