lan feature !!!

Bob

well I have sat here for the past 3 hours and tried to get my packet machine to work with my internet machine over the LAN
being a newbie to LAN I still need to do a bit of soul searching.

I have read the docs and still it eludes me
what exactly do I need to do ????

can someone enlighten me in layman's terms
I have for my internet machine a p133 with a pci network card running into a 5 port hub
for packet I have a p300 with the same type of network card running into the same hub
UI-view 2.16 is loaded onto both machines

I have seen the lights on the hub flashing (port 1 and 2) which leads me to believe that I am most of the way there but I am missing that vital ingredient !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ho hum

BTW Roger thanks for the f8 key on disabling the GPS makes driving a lot easier now that I can switch to another application while on the move

Hi Bob

First make sure your network works using windows so you can access files on
the other computer.

Then install AGW (new version) on both machines
On the packet machine make sure winsock interface is ticked

run ui-view on the packet machine and make sure it works with agw.
run ui-view on the remote machine and setup the host to agw and clck on
setup and enter the IP address on the packet machine.

Once this is done you get UI-View on the remote machine operating exactly as
if it was on the packet machine. Nice one Roger!

====
If you wish to setup it up so as to connect to the internet from your packet
machine then you need to get hold of wingate and install it on your internet
machine.

Good Luck- Andy, G7OCW

Hi Bob

Woops you need only run AGW on the packet machine it is not needed on the
remote machine.

As far as I know you need agw see below for the extract from changes 216.txt

As for setting up an IP adress do start -> settings -> control panel ->
network
Then look for TCP/IP > do properties on the IP adress tab do specify ip
adress and pick something at random such as 33.33.33.01 this is now your IP
adress and for god's sake do this only on your packet machine not your
internet machine otherwise you will run into problems with your internet
machine.

Hope that helps.

(V2.16)
20. AGW host mode now supports the Packet Engine tcp/ip interface.
Previously it only supported the DDE interface. If the Packet Engine
and UI-View are running on the same PC (the normal situation), there
is no advantage to using the tcp/ip interface. However, it enables you
to have AGWPE running on a different PC to UI-View. PLEASE read the
"AGWPE Setup" section of the help, and PLEASE TAKE NOTE of the
requirements. In particular, you MUST have version 2000.13, dated 29th
December 1999, or later of the Packet Engine, because all previous
versions lacked support on the tcp/ip interface for a feature used by
UI-View. NOTE - there was an earlier version 2000.13 that didn't have
support for the required feature.

I managed to get it going after a while. The problem was that I hadn't done
the configuration within AGW itself.

You have to have the latest version of AGW installed on each PC.

On the system with the radio(s) installed, enable the "Winsock Interface"

On the non wireless equiped system, run up AGW with no ports. Load UI-View
and in the comms setup screen you select AGW, click the "setup" button. You
then need to enter the IP address of the first PC in the box and enable
TCP/IP rather than DDE.

It's all working for me except for one thing. I can't get the second system
to send beacons out via the main system. I don't know if that's possible at
all. It will send out pings and messages, etc, but not beacons.

hummmm so as i thought i dont need to run agw if i dont want to
but i can still get it to work over a lan
agw and tc-ip set up says it will work for 45 mins any longer than i have to
recnnect the link or pay a registration fee.

fine but to pay 28 bucks for that is a bit much suppose and i dont want to
run agw.

so option 2 is for me

any one going to give a blow by blow account on how to do it

Reading the follow-ups to this message, two things are being confused:-

1. The ability to run UI-View on one PC, and AGWPE on another.

2. What Bob is actually asking - he wants to use one UI-View system as a
server for another system. That's not the same as '1', and whether or
not you are using AGWPE is irrelevant.

Both are new features in V2.16b, and I thought there might be some
confusion!

'1' works *exactly* like using UI-View with AGWPE has always worked, the
only difference is that AGWPE and the TNCS/modems/radios can be on one
PC, and UI-View can be on another. (Note - AGWPE only needs to be on one
PC, not on both.)

'2' allows UI-View to work as a server for other systems, rather like
APRServe works. Once the local server is enabled, other systems can
connect to it just as if they were connecting to APRServe.

First you need to decide which you want to do. (You can, of course, do
both.) Then you really need to read the "AGWPE Setup" section of the
help for '1', or the "APRS Server Setup" and "Local Server" sections of
the help for '2'.

For either '1' or '2', you need to have TCP/IP installed on all the PCs
you are using. If you are linking via your LAN, TCP/IP must be attached
to the ethernet adaptor, and you must have assigned IP addresses to both
PCs. That is nothing to do with UI-View, it's basic TCP/IP set-up stuff,
but I know it can be confusing! Because the TDP/IP support in UI-View
will always do a DNS look-up before it establishes a connection, you
really need to create HOSTS files containing the local machine domain
names and addresses.

I know the above is nothing like a blow by blow "how to do it" account,
but hopefully the details can be filled in as more specific questions
are asked.

Hello Roger - Thanks for that, it does clarify things a bit.

I'm happy with UI-View and AGW on one PC and just UI-View on another.

However, despite having edited my hosts file (actually hosts.sam) with the
following entries:

# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
90.0.0.1 PII-400
90.0.0.3 PII-350
90.0.0.9 PII-266

I still get UI-View opening up the "dial up connection" box on the second PC
(PII-400) when it starts.

The above are the IP addresses and names of the PC's on my network - The
PII-350 entry is for the system running AGW/UI-view, PII-400 is for the
system I am running just UI-View on, and the remaining PII-266 is just a
third system on the network.

It's no great problem just having to click cancel, but I thought that having
the hosts file set would get around this.

UI-View doesn't open it. Windows opens it if it can't locally resolve an
address.

Hello Roger - Thanks for that, it does clarify things a bit.

I'm happy with UI-View and AGW on one PC and just UI-View on another.

However, despite having edited my hosts file (actually hosts.sam) with the
following entries:
[snip]

For Win95/8, I've also used a file simply called HOSTS.
I've just had a look at this, and I hadn't previously noticed that
Win95/8 actually included a file called HOSTS.SAM. However, I think
you'll find that it's so called because it's a SAMple HOSTS file. Try
renaming it to HOSTS and I think you'll find it makes a difference!

For testing, you can use PING machine_name from a DOS window.

A little off the topic -- it's unwise to just make up an IP address like
90.0.0.1. If are some blocks reserved for unregistered networks -- they

192.168.*. (There may be a third but I don't remember the details.)

Hi Bob

You don't need to run the MAIN TCPIP facility in AGW (the one you have to
pay for!)

Set that back to TCPIP no thanks and just right click on the AGWPE item on
the task bar and tick the bit that says Winsock Interface thats the only
thing you have to do to get TCPIP working for UI-View

Then go into setup -> comms setup on the remote PC and set host to agw ->
click setup select TCP/IP enter the address of the packet machine. click OK

I know the above is nothing like a blow by blow "how to do it" account,
but hopefully the details can be filled in as more specific questions
are asked.

Actually, you DON'T need the AGWPE TCP/IP module to use its TCP/IP
interface from within a program. (I could explain that further, but I
think there's an explanation on George's web site as to what the TCP/IP
module is for.) So anyone with the latest AGWPE can connect to it using
TCP/IP from UI-View without having to register anything.

That's the problem, Bob. Running network mode requires AGWPE as the host.
No, as said in a message yesterday, using UI-View as a server, which is
what Bob wants to do, is a completely different thing to connecting to
AGWPE, local or remote, via TCP/IP.

When you connect to AGWPE via TCP/IP, it's just the same as using AGWPE
on your own PC, except that the TNCs and radios can be on another PC,
and that PC can be on your LAN or on the other side of the world!

When you connect to UI-View operating as a server, it's very similar to
connecting to APRServe. The client sees the traffic from the server's
radios, and the client's traffic can be gated out to RF by the server.
Several clients can connect to the server and talk to each other, just
as if they were connected to APRServe. You can also connect the server
to APRServe and all its clients are then effectively connected to
APRServe. AGWPE isn't needed.

The reason I'm reluctant to try to provide a blow by blow account of how
to do it is that most of the setting up is a case of getting TCP/IP
working on the two PCs. That's a Windows configuration thing, it isn't
remotely specific to UI-View, and it can be very difficult to explain
something like that from long distance, if the person trying to follow
the instructions hits problems.

Both PCs must have TCP/IP attached to their LAN adaptors, they must have
IP addresses assigned to those adaptors, and they need a HOSTS file with
correct entries for the host names and IP addresses of the machines on
the LAN.

Once you've got TCP/IP working between the two PCs, the UI-View bit is
very easy. Other than for the INI file entries, all the setting up, for
both server and client, is done in "APRS Server Setup". The INI file
entries must be made when UI-View isn't running.

On the server PC
----------------
1. You make an entry in IGATE.INI for the callsign being used on
the client PC, so its traffic will be gated to RF. E.g. -
G4IDE*=TRUE
(That's assuming you want to gate the traffic.)

2. You check "Enable local server".

On the client PC
----------------
1. You make an entry in the [APRS_Server] section of UIVIEW.INI for the
server PC. E.g. if the server PC is called "packet" -
packet=1448

2. You select that as your APRS Server.

3. You don't check "APRServe log on required".

4. You connect to the server by using "Connect To APRS Server".

Perhaps someone who has got TCP/IP working on a LAN could try setting up
two UI-View systems as server and client, and then report back? It might
result in a better explanation than I'm giving!
