A little off the topic -- it's unwise to just make up an IP address like
90.0.0.1. If are some blocks reserved for unregistered networks -- they
are 10.* (so you can use 10.0.0.1, etc, even 10.255.255.1), and
192.168.*. (There may be a third but I don't remember the details.)

DX Annoucement

Andy Pritchard

Hi Roger

Im trying to get wav files to play from VB3 I tried using OLE wav objects
but for some reason on one machine it works and on the other I get 'out of
memory' so I presume that is probably not the best way to do it?

I wondered if I could use and call speech.exe which was used with winpack.
If this is possible could you let me know what I need to pass it.

Or finally is a annouce a dx over a certain distance somthing which you
would prefer to add into UI-View itself rather than a addon.

So, the time and date looks good, but the version number doesn't!

Can anyone confirm whether or not this is the current version?
Yes, it's correct. Although the About box shows 2000.126, when you ask
it for its version from an application, it returns 2000.15.

I've just had a look at this, and I hadn't previously noticed that
Win95/8 actually included a file called HOSTS.SAM. However, I think
you'll find that it's so called because it's a SAMple HOSTS file. Try
renaming it to HOSTS and I think you'll find it makes a difference!

For testing, you can use PING machine_name from a DOS window.

SV2AGW has now issued version 2000.15 of the Packet Engine. It replaces
version 2000.13 issued on 29th December, and fixes the remaining
problems that I had found.

The download URL is:-

Warning! I had a bit of trouble with IE5 persuading the correct version
to download. I run a large local cache, and IE insisted on "downloading"
the previous version from the cache, even though I tried to force a
refresh. In the end I had to flush the cache.

I had to put a fairly large "bodge" in V2.16b to persuade it to work
with the previous version of AGWPE. That "bodge" will be removed in the
next update, so you will then need to have version 2000.15 if you want
to use the TCP/IP interface.

Hello Roger - Thanks for that, it does clarify things a bit.

I'm happy with UI-View and AGW on one PC and just UI-View on another.

However, despite having edited my hosts file (actually hosts.sam) with the
following entries:

# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
90.0.0.1 PII-400
90.0.0.3 PII-350
90.0.0.9 PII-266

I still get UI-View opening up the "dial up connection" box on the second PC
(PII-400) when it starts.

The above are the IP addresses and names of the PC's on my network - The
PII-350 entry is for the system running AGW/UI-view, PII-400 is for the
system I am running just UI-View on, and the remaining PII-266 is just a
third system on the network.

It's no great problem just having to click cancel, but I thought that having
the hosts file set would get around this.

Reading the follow-ups to this message, two things are being confused:-

1. The ability to run UI-View on one PC, and AGWPE on another.

2. What Bob is actually asking - he wants to use one UI-View system as a
server for another system. That's not the same as '1', and whether or
not you are using AGWPE is irrelevant.

Both are new features in V2.16b, and I thought there might be some
confusion!

'1' works *exactly* like using UI-View with AGWPE has always worked, the
only difference is that AGWPE and the TNCS/modems/radios can be on one
PC, and UI-View can be on another. (Note - AGWPE only needs to be on one
PC, not on both.)

'2' allows UI-View to work as a server for other systems, rather like
APRServe works. Once the local server is enabled, other systems can
connect to it just as if they were connecting to APRServe.

First you need to decide which you want to do. (You can, of course, do
both.) Then you really need to read the "AGWPE Setup" section of the
help for '1', or the "APRS Server Setup" and "Local Server" sections of
the help for '2'.

For either '1' or '2', you need to have TCP/IP installed on all the PCs
you are using. If you are linking via your LAN, TCP/IP must be attached
to the ethernet adaptor, and you must have assigned IP addresses to both
PCs. That is nothing to do with UI-View, it's basic TCP/IP set-up stuff,
but I know it can be confusing! Because the TDP/IP support in UI-View
will always do a DNS look-up before it establishes a connection, you
really need to create HOSTS files containing the local machine domain
names and addresses.

I know the above is nothing like a blow by blow "how to do it" account,
but hopefully the details can be filled in as more specific questions
are asked.

Roger Barker <[email protected]

In article <NDBBJMAEILOINLDPFAALEEFICDAA.feek@...>, Keith Maton
<feek@...> writes
Greetings.

I have two 2.16b network questions..
Do these questions relate to connecting to AGWPE on a remote PC, or
connecting to a copy of UI-View acting as a server on a remote PC?

1) When I start 2.16b on the remote PC, it opens my dial up networking
connection. Now, being a sensible person I don't have this set to dial
automatically so it doesn't, but I have to cancel this before it connects to
the main system. Is there any way I can stop this happening?
It's trying to do a DNS look-up. The TCP/IP support in UI-View will
always do a DNS look-up before establishing a connection.

You can provide local DNS information, and so stop the dialling, by
creating a HOSTS file on each PC containing the host names and IP
addresses of the machines on your LAN. (There are comments on HOSTS in a
couple of places in the help.) For Win95/8 the HOSTS file goes in the
WINDOWS directory. As an example, my current HOSTS file says:-

# IP address Host name
# ---------- ---------
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 development
192.168.0.2 kidz
192.168.0.3 voyager
192.168.0.4 packet
192.168.0.5 k6

2) I can't get the remote PC to send any beacons out on air. It will ping
and message quite happily, but not beacon. As far as I know, it's all set
correctly, but nothing happens. Should it, or has this been deliberately
disabled? I've had a good R of TFM but can find no mention of this.
If you're connecting to AGWPE on a remote PC, then beacons definitely go
out. Functionally it's just the same as connecting to AGWPE on your own
PC.

If you're connecting to another copy of UI-View acting as a server, then
gating from your LAN to RF follows the same rules as gating from the
internet to RF. So, to gate all your own traffic, you need to make a
suitable entry in IGATE.INI. E.g. -

[INET_TO_RF]
G6NHU*=TRUE

Note also that gated traffic from your LAN goes out in "third party"
format, just the same as traffic from the internet - have a look at the
frames that are transmitted.

hummmm so as i thought i dont need to run agw if i dont want to
but i can still get it to work over a lan
agw and tc-ip set up says it will work for 45 mins any longer than i have to
recnnect the link or pay a registration fee.

fine but to pay 28 bucks for that is a bit much suppose and i dont want to
run agw.

so option 2 is for me

any one going to give a blow by blow account on how to do it

That's the lot.

Happy New Year to everyone: Midnight passed, the electricity didn't go off,
I didn't spot any aircraft falling out of the sky (I'm underneath one of the
main flight paths into the UK), the toaster still worked. My PC's didn't
explode, Philippa Forrester still looked good, the champagne still tasted
fine, the TNC's didn't crash, the video carried on recording, the phone
still works, my printer still prints. I still didn't win the lottery, the
remote control for my DVD player still operates.

All in all, pretty normal!

Please would it be possible to split the message window so that internet

that there's so much internet message traffic that it makes it very

Ahah, I've just learnt...

I was using AGW on the remote. Removed it and it still talks! Thanks Andy

Hi Bob

Woops you need only run AGW on the packet machine it is not needed on the
remote machine.

As far as I know you need agw see below for the extract from
changes 216.txt

As for setting up an IP adress do start -> settings -> control panel ->
network
Then look for TCP/IP > do properties on the IP adress tab do specify ip
adress and pick something at random such as 33.33.33.01 this is
now your IP
adress and for god's sake do this only on your packet machine not your
internet machine otherwise you will run into problems with your internet
machine.

Hope that helps.
===
(V2.16)
20. AGW host mode now supports the Packet Engine tcp/ip interface.
Previously it only supported the DDE interface. If the Packet Engine
and UI-View are running on the same PC (the normal situation), there
is no advantage to using the tcp/ip interface. However, it enables you
to have AGWPE running on a different PC to UI-View. PLEASE read the
"AGWPE Setup" section of the help, and PLEASE TAKE NOTE of the
requirements. In particular, you MUST have version 2000.13, dated 29th
December 1999, or later of the Packet Engine, because all previous
versions lacked support on the tcp/ip interface for a feature used by
UI-View. NOTE - there was an earlier version 2000.13 that didn't have
support for the required feature.

Hi Bob

First make sure your network works using windows so you can
access files
on
the other computer.

Then install AGW (new version) on both machines
On the packet machine make sure winsock interface is ticked

run ui-view on the packet machine and make sure it works with agw.
run ui-view on the remote machine and setup the host to agw and clck on
setup and enter the IP address on the packet machine.

Once this is done you get UI-View on the remote machine
operating exactly
as
if it was on the packet machine. Nice one Roger!

====
If you wish to setup it up so as to connect to the internet from your
packet
machine then you need to get hold of wingate and install it on your
internet
machine.

Good Luck- Andy, G7OCW

well I have sat here for the past 3 hours and tried to get my packet
machine to work with my internet machine over the LAN
being a newbie to LAN I still need to do a bit of soul searching.

I have read the docs and still it eludes me
what exactly do I need to do ????

can someone enlighten me in layman's terms
I have for my internet machine a p133 with a pci network card running
into
a 5 port hub
for packet I have a p300 with the same type of network card running
into
the same hub
UI-view 2.16 is loaded onto both machines

I have seen the lights on the hub flashing (port 1 and 2) which leads
me
to believe that I am most of the way there but I am missing that vital
ingredient !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ho hum

BTW Roger thanks for the f8 key on disabling the GPS makes driving a
lot
easier now that I can switch to another application while on the move

Re: lan feature !!!

I managed to get it going after a while. The problem was that I hadn't done
the configuration within AGW itself.

You have to have the latest version of AGW installed on each PC.

On the system with the radio(s) installed, enable the "Winsock Interface"

On the non wireless equiped system, run up AGW with no ports. Load UI-View
and in the comms setup screen you select AGW, click the "setup" button. You
then need to enter the IP address of the first PC in the box and enable
TCP/IP rather than DDE.

It's all working for me except for one thing. I can't get the second system
to send beacons out via the main system. I don't know if that's possible at
all. It will send out pings and messages, etc, but not beacons.
