Lard Magazine The Magistrates Daughter

The scenario looks like a good one, but I have a few questions.

British player two’s force is commanded by Captain Cornwall but no status is given for him. What should that be?

The objectives for each side don’t specify at which point victory is determined, for example if the British rescue the two women from the house do they need to get them off the table, or is contacting them an immediate victory? Given movement is specified for the cow I’m assuming you need to get them somewhere, so would assume that is off the same table edge they entered? Or would any table edge do?

An Infamous New Year

A Happy New Year to all Lardites and Lardophiles. Infamy on all Luddits and Lardophobes.

I ended 2020 by clearing the French and Spanish TYW from the table. The French "Queen's Light Horse" having covered themselves with glory.

I thought I'd begin the New Year with my first Infamy Infamy campaign - hence the title at the top. I've played a few games. Now it's time for Chieftain Fulliautomatix? to take on Centurion Sender Victorius in a full campaign. Let the carnage begin. Well almost, just one or two bits to check, like ambush points, then off we go drawing cards. I've rolled the escort scenario and it's the Gauls doing the escorting.

All the best to you and your dice for 2021. Alea iacta est.

Stephen

Re: Review of 2020 Games

Stephen, I’ve only played a single game but based on that I took an immediate liking to it. It has Lardy DNA that would make it familiar to anyone who’s played IABSM or Sharp Practice. It is a little bit looser and allows room for player interpretation which might not be to everyone’s liking, particularly if you prefer your rules a bit tighter. I think they work well as they are, but seeing that Rich has already been tempted to create a CoC variant that was published in one of the Specials I suspect it’s a rule set he may want to revisit at some stage in the future, but for now I’ll take them as they are.

They have all the usual ingredients - card driven activation, use of leaders (big men) are key to optimising unit performance, historical unit structure etc. One thing you might want to note is that they are really aimed at playing the later war from ‘16 to ‘18. They are very much focused on the tactical evolution occurring at the time.

Re: Review of 2020 Games

Sounds like a great game, Stephen.? Some friends of mine have taken a shine to The Pikeman's Lament and are planning some skirmishes using those rules.??

Thanks, Byron, for the link which I've followed up. It was a new one to me.

I'm now fighting a TYW battle which could have seen the Three Musketeers in action. The Spanish are tasked to withdraw from the battlefield [because of off table events] despite being drawn up within musket shot of the French. So far the French Queen's Light horse are the one's causing mayhem.

A happy New Year to you and all who read this

Stephen, if you don't already visit Mark's blog, "The Tactical Painter," I highly recommend it.? He just posted an item about his Mud and the Blood WWI project. The blog also contains riveting reports on his CoC campaigns, with very sound analysis of what worked and what didn't.? It's a virtual treasure trove for CoC devotees.??

I'm sure he will be posting in the future on how the WWI project is going.?

Mark, I'd be interested to hear more of your experience of Through the Mud and the Blood as it's a ruleset I've bought but not played since - though I was part of a group game a few years back from which I remember the figures but not the rules.

There's not much mention of Infamy Infamy. Has this suffered by arriving in the year of restrictions? I've done some painting for it - old Foundry figures - and had some solo games but should do more.

Re: Review of 2020 Games

Infamy Infamy - yes for my part that has suffered from the lockdown. I ordered a lot of Germans and Auxilia (incl cavalry) from Victrix, as I wanted to build an Auxilia force. I managed to assemble them just in time for my initial painting frenzy to subside and my mojo to be mislaid by early summer. I've painted some since, but haven't really found my mojo back. I guess in part because we're looking at long lasting restrictions here, worsened by my trusted partner?in crime for things like this, self-isolating as he's in a risk group... Maybe I should look at solo gaming, but I have never really enjoyed it. and I don't really have a space where I can leave a game set up...

Re: Review of 2020 Games

We were lucky in Sydney with a full lockdown only in March and April. By May we were back to face to face gaming with only a few restrictions. So, in an otherwise?bad year I had a good year's gaming, dominated as usual by Chain of Command. Three campaigns completed: Taking the Gembloux Gap; 29, Let’s Go! and Last Stand on Opium Hill (published in WSS magazine).

In between those CoC campaigns I played several games of Sharp Practice and reached a watershed moment where we really felt we had ‘got’ the rules.

Via the blog I was invited to a club in western Sydney to play IABSM for the first time. I have the rules but never played, so this was a good introduction and great to meet some new gamers. That fired me up to finally make a decision on what scale to collect for the rules and I settled on 10/12mm thinking that would also work for O Group.

The last quarter of 2020 saw my regular opponent and I join a new club (well, old club, but new to us). A smallish group with wide ranging tastes, but mainly historical. Their weekly meetings have allowed us to explore a variety of rules, some Lard, some otherwise. Highlight for me was a first game using Through the Mud & Blood that revived my long dormant First World War project that had sat idle and half complete for lack of an opponent. This has opened a few doors, not least setting to work painting figures, but also exploring the CoC version of Mud & Blood. We also played a few games of Osprey’s Black Ops and I see the kernel of an idea in adapting some of the stealth rules for trench raids.

Lockdown gaming didn’t exactly pass me by though, as I took part in the last Virtual Lard enjoying a game of CoC hosted in Bavaria against opponents in the UK.

So, all in all several rays of gaming sunshine in an otherwise unusual and at times bleak year.

No games for me since March 2020. I was lucky to have a game of FIW SP not long before the UK lockdown started. I have been really busy on other wargaming stuff though and re-wired my lighting for a more Victorian gentleman's club vibe (no - not that kind of club).? I've also done quite a bit of 20mm painting (for me) and been making more scenery for IABSM.

I plan to start 2021 with a solo IABSM game in Normandy, mid -June

Best wishes to all on here

We played some games early in the year, mostly board games though (Zombicide, Cthulu, then tested Tail Feathers and Aftermath). Then came the pandemic and very little games after that, apart from some games with my kids (Mysterium and others). I can't remember my last real wargame, I think in november 2019...

What's your year looked like Rules-wise? Has there been a predominant set or an epicure's mix [dog's breakfast] like me? Can you declare that "Lard is for life?"

Obviously this is a dreadful state of affairs. Let's hope we can get back to a proper schedule soon.

Re: Review of 2020 Games

No wargames for me (which is unfortunately a normal state of affairs) but I plugged away and got most of a second army done for Japanese Dux.?

I did start playing the Lord of the Rings card game which I got a a lot of games in. Putting cards out is a fair bit quicker and easier to pack up.

I'm hopeful for 2021, a gaming buddy is hopefully buying his own place with plenty of room for gaming, something very difficult for me with the kids around
