Hadn't heard of this one; I've just dropped a subscribe over there as well :)

There are more non UK European members than usual thanks to its origins, and it has a pretty rigid no-dickheads policy. Politics is (virtually) unknown.

I usually check new items daily, but it's quite high traffic so there can be two to three pages of new items daily. They are well sorted so you need only see the boards you are interested in, and no Tango!

Ah well. I only go there (without signing in) to laugh and point, and marvel at the (lack of) intellect and derangement of certain TMP worthies. It's hard to find something good to say about a global pandemic, but one of the side effects has been to bring a lot of new people to The Miniatures Page. To our new members, welcome! To our older members, meet and greet!

As you may know, the U.S.A. offered a program to assist businesses during the pandemic. We chose not to participate. Unlike some businesses, we did not see a major decline in revenues. A few of our advertisers shut down their advertising because they were forced to close down, but the vast majority have continued to support us through this difficult time (and in fact, have seen the value TMP provides in bringing all of us gamers together). And, as I've mentioned, we've been blessed with an increase in new members.

Speaking of staff, we've all had our challenges. I'm in New York, where we've been very strictly quarantined - and fortunately, due to TMP, I work at home. Our staff in the Philippines have been grateful to have work when their country is in lockdown, but have had the burden of supporting aged parents who have reduced incomes under lockdown. So things have been very stressful for Editor Gwen and Editor Dianna.

Let me close out this email by reminding you that TMP needs your support to continue supporting the hobby. If you can afford to upgrade to Sponsoring Membership, even if only for a month or two, we would certainly appreciate it. You can upgrade your membership here:

I got thrown off there for posting on the British vs American wargamers post, which HE had started, and then when it turned into a flame war, he blamed everyone else and banned so many regulars and subscribers, he had to send one of his usual begging letters, most ignored it. Much better on LAF anyway.

Re: Combat in Russian Forests and Swamps: Historical Study

The Preface says:

"The reader is reminded that publications in the GERMAN REPORT SERIES were written by Germans from the German point of view. Throughout this pamphlet, any mention of ¡°normal methods¡± or standard infantry tactics refers to German combat doctrines, and applies to units organized and equipped in accordance with German regulations. Similarly, the recommendations contained in the final section are made against the background of German methods of individual and unit training before and during World War II."

So it's going to have a decidedly German point of view.

Chuck

Re: Combat in Russian Forests and Swamps: Historical Study

Fascinating. It's interesting that when the enemy apparently has superior tactical knowledge of the area of combat (forest/swamp), it's rationalized as "the certain instinct and sense of security of an animal, whereas any soldier reared and trained in a civilized country was severely restricted in his movements and thereby placed at a disadvantage." And that, "Even the most thorough training applied to troops from the West cannot replace the natural instinct peculiar to Eastern Europeans who were born and raised in a region of forests and swamps." (Quoting from the Forward.) A little bit of untermensch thinking here??

One can imagine a U.S. commander saying the same about the Seminoles during the Seminole Wars, or a British commander saying the same about Francis Marion's partisans during the AWI, or a Massachusetts Bay colonist saying the same about the Wampanoag during New England's King Philip's War of the 1670s.?

Thanks for sharing!

The only changes will be in changing the Boyes for a PIAT and vehicles in the support list. Perhaps some Nationalistic traits as troops such as Ghurkhas and West Africans are added in.
