TT4 Green and Yellow Lights

Hi team. New to the group. Trying to get back into ham radio. I attempted to update the firmware of my TT4, but during the upload, the LEDs became "stuck" on solid yellow and green. I loaded version 7.2 (or it at least appeared to upload), but none of the commands in the terminal window seem to be working, just a constant string of ????? I've read through the posts, and it sounds like the solution is to just wait? Do I wait with the TT4 plugged in and hope that it corrects itself?
?
Just curious because this is really frustrating. I haven't touched my TT4 in around 10 years, and it worked fine before life got in the way. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I was, but only with the TT4 in KISS mode and connected to a computer (Raspberry Pi).

I wasn't aware the TT4 could operate as a plain packet TNC on its own.

I don't want to transmit APRS on packet frequencies.

I don't want to transmit position packets although some packet beacons might contain such information.

Re: Tiny Trak 2 info

I think they all sent some information out the serial interface at startup - maybe some firmware info.

Try connecting it to a terminal program like TeraTerm or PuTTY.
I suggest starting at 9600 baud in the terminal program and cycle power on the unit.??
If nothing or unreadable go up to 19200, then down to 4800, 2400, 1200.? I doubt it would go less than 1200

You can barely see N6BG beside the connector on the board. and the board looks the same as The Tiny Track 2.

Re: Tiny Trak 2 info

TT2's and original TT3's used the 16F628 PIC. I could be wrong, but as far as I know, these were always the 18 pin version. There were and are, a number of TT2 "clones" out there because the TT2 was open-source. It can be configured with the current Byonics Configuration utility program. It would not be a terrible surprise if some of the clones used the 20 pin variant.?

Re: Parameters for Using as Packet TNC?

I haven't uses JNOS or others (WinLink, etc.) in years, but asking the question DOES generate the proper answers.

>>> MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION <<<
Will your be running on the APRS frequency or other packet frequencies?
?? Sending position reports and other APRS information cane be frowned upon on some packet frequencies.
?? Although some users are quire tolerant - as long as it doesn't clog the frequency.

Beyond that here are the other related questions that determine specific settings:
1. Do you want the TT4 to send a position packet every XXX seconds?
??? If no, PPERIOD 0
???????????? MPERIOD 0
???????????? SBEN FALSE
???? NOTE: with PPRIOD 0 no STATUS message will be sent!
2. Do you want readable packets to go out over the air (so other TNCs read them as text)?
??? if yes TPROTOCOL APRS - nonAPRS application expect plain text which is APRS (not Mic-E or Compressed)
3. Do you want to send your BTEXT periodically?
??? Then BPERIOD XXX?????????????????????????????? (period in seconds)
5. Do you want to send weather data (this is an APRS message)?
??? if no, WPERIOD 0
???????????? WXPOS {doesn't matter if above is 0)
6. Do you want to DIGI APRS or "other" DIGI?
??? APRS uses the WIDEn-N alias names.
??? Others DIGI ALIAS names vary.? Most use the CALLSIGN
?? ???? DIGIMY TRUE?????? >> Personally think this is ALWAYS good practice.
???????????? or specific SSIDs (in the old Kantronics K-NODE system -8, -1 mailbox, ...)
7. It appears you have a display (
??? NODISP False -> double negative so you have one
??? TXTDISP TRUE -> use it to display data?
8. Send received data to the attached computer:
??? MODE KISS???????????? << A/B => Probably using only 1.? Most clients use KISS, but some may use TEXT.? Client dependent.
??? BAUD 9600????????????? << A/B => Typically want this higher than RF rate.? If sending large packets, NOT MUCH higher (no HW buffer)
??? PKTICOM TRUE
??? KPTOCOM TRUE??????? << good idea to see if any TT4 generated packets get created and sent
9. Transmit Path
???? These need to match your application and on air practice for your area.? APRS is pretty standard, but other may not be.

Hopefully that covers your needs and explains my question a bit more clearly.

Re: Parameters for Using as Packet TNC?

I am not sure what you are asking here.?
The TT4 function would be best described as:
? ?a) Send only TNC or tracker
? ?b) Receiver only? TNC or decoder
? ?c) Combined fully functional TNC
?
What functions are you trying to enable, and for what purpose?
Examples:
? ?a) Full APRS TNC:?
? ? ? ?APRS position reporting on RF and back through an attached PC, plus APRS style DIGI (WIDEn-N style), ...
? ?b) Keyboard-to-Keyboard TNC:
? ? ? ?Computer running terminal software for interfacing to BBS style nodes, Callsign and alias DIGI with no APRS functions, ...

I used to use my TT4 for packet and APRS.? I believe all I did was set the baud rate with ABAUD (like "ABAUD 19200") and then put it into KISS mode with "AMODE KISS", then the software on the computer did the rest.
