Re: Fw: [projects-in-metal] A $5 2 axis DRO for a small drill press
Hi Reg, That is my favorite manner of drilling. Centering with a punch & hammer is very difficult te be spot-on. I use the X-Y coordinate system, calculate the positions and start with the X & Y display on 0 at the corner of the front panel. |
Re: Fw: [projects-in-metal] A $5 2 axis DRO for a small drill press
Where are you getting digital calipers for $2.50?
?I like the idea. Now how how can we make it adjustable, to use on longer throws? ? I know that would limit the use to 6 in cuts, but if you leave the drill bit and the hole and move the caliper adjustment, it could work. ???????????????????? Mikek |
Re: Fw: [projects-in-metal] A $5 2 axis DRO for a small drill press
I can do traditional machinist's layouts just fine which has previously been my regular method. What I can no longer do is get the drill bit on the punch mark accurately. I miss by 0.5 mm or less, but it adds up to be obvious to the naked eye with several jacks in line. My eyes can't be fixed, so I have to change methods to accommodate the reality of old age. The sequence was exactly as you describe,? after starting the two 750kva diesel generating sets with compressed air,? the two were synchronised and a breaker closed to parallel them up.? There was a multi-pin plug which you pulled out,? rotated
and pressed back in to select synchronise engines together or synchronise to incoming supply.? When connecting in parallel to the utility supply the trick was to get the synchroscope rotating very slowly in a clockwise direction using the speed adjust switch
and close the breaker just as the needle hit 12 o'clock then quickly increase engine speed again. This procedure was to ensure we didn't feed power back into the grid, (there was a reverse power trip breaker located in the utility substation). The engines
didn't really increase speed,? only went to leading phase to take over the load and when the utility power meter dropped to about 100kw incoming you tripped the incoming breaker.?
The engines were twin English Electric V8 900hp 750rpm with Napier turbochargers which you could hear spin up until they went supersonic as you drew more power.?
Did this every Tuesday. I was in my late teens at HF Point to Point Station Ongar in southern England. Great memories! Paul

Re: A pot box
An interesting example of the benefit of power line impedance arose years ago at Voice of America transmitting sites where sites outside the USA often generated their own power.? When multiple AM-modulated high-power transmitters carried the same program, this played havoc with the generators and voltage generation.? Delay devices in the audio path between transmitters reduced this problem.?
At Greenville, North Carolina, it was economically advantageous to run the sites' 1 MW generators on hot summer afternoons.? Even though these might carry the light midday transmission loads, connecting to the power line greatly improved voltage regulation in the presence of modulation.? In effect, modulation peaks caused currents to flow back and forth between the generators and power lines, with the automatically-synchronizing switch-gear maintaining an average generator output of 1 MW.? Utility power was delivered to the sites at 115 kV and transformed to 4160 V at substations for the buildings and transmitters.? Generators connected via the switchgear to the 4160 V side. I once used an virtually infinite dummy load.? We were testing gas turbine powered generator sets and needed dummy loads that exceeded 40KW.? The solution was to connect the running generator to the power grid with a device that triggered the contactor at the zero crossing point of the sine wave.? Once that was done, we simply tweaked the generator output voltage until we had the working load we needed.? Problem solved AND we used the generated power to lower our electric bill.

Fw: [projects-in-metal] A $5 2 axis DRO for a small drill press
This is not an electronics project per se, but as it is specifically intended for drilling front panels, etc. I thought I'd give a heads up on the radio oriented lists. Travel is slightly larger than 3" x 6" which should suffice for getting holes in a straight line. Have Fun! When building a complete instrument it usually takes me 2-3 times as long to package it as it does to design/build the electronics and software. Case fabrication, layout, labeling/painting, assembly, finding all the bits, it all takes time. A while ago I picked up an Acme PS2L-1000 kilowatt electronic load. You can sometimes find them fairly cheap. They're electrically programmable, but don't have any fancy controllers in the instrument (hence why they're cheap). I built this unit to interface the load with a PC for logging and programmatic control. Communication is over a USB or rs232 serial link with a simple protocol. BTW, if anyone has one of these loads and wants my design, just ask. I'd be happy to share. Brian, Lots of vendors link a low cost option in a listing which includes the featured item at much higher price. Your list will grow forever. List scam tricks instead. I got such a $38 bait and switch antenna for free when I thought I ordered a mag loop antenna and got a short whip with some LC circuit feeding it. Seller didn't ask for it back. I got a full refund. Bought a mag loop from another vendor who also showed a stand I did not get. I got most of the cost of a stand as a partial refund. Stand from another vendor arrived today and works great. Just the ticket for my Icom 705. I'm getting in a real lather to get relicensed. I was occasionally keying through the entire alphabet a 20 wpm today without an error (1 in 20 :-(. When I got single signal reception on a station 30 Hz above and 50 Hz below 2 stronger stations during a contest 5 days after I got my 705 I was hooked on CW. 3 stations running QSOs in 100 Hz? Wow! They just showed up on the Aliexpress page so I searched on the part number and picked the cheapest option at the time. At $5 US they are still a great deal in my book.
