Mystery Probe Accessory Grab Bag 'o Fun
I've been trolling the "pile of miscellaneous parts" auctions/sales on eBay in an attempt to cheaply bulk up my supply of consumable probe accessories, and I hit a few jackpots, but now I need some help identifying some of the bits and bobs. I have put three pictures of the most mysterious items in this album: /g/TekScopes/album?id=259732
I think I know that <A> and <B> are probe tip adapters to get very short ground loops, but I'm not sure what kind of probes they go with. <B> fits both miniature modular and compact modular probes, but <A> looks much too big. I have no idea what C is supposed to be for. They appear to be torsion springs, very stiff metal, and hooked as if they were going to be installed on a catch around a rotating shaft or hinge. I suspect that D, E, and F are tips for different probes. Does anyone know what probes they belong to? Only F looks small enough to go with any of the probes I have. G, H, J, and K are ground leads, but the don't seem to be usable with any probes that I have on hand. Does anyone know what probes they are for? I expect that L is some kind of specialized probe tip. Does anyone recognize these, and now what probe they belong to? Any help identifying these parts would be appreciated. -- Jeff Dutky |

<A> is probably for the P6201 FET probe. --John Gord On Sat, Jan 23, 2021 at 08:48 PM, Jeff Dutky wrote:

After trolling through the probe entries, and scanning each manual, on TekWiki, I have some tentative identifications:
<A> and <D> seem to be for the P6008/6009, as are some other parts (hook tips, banana tips, screw-on sprung hook tip, etc) that I didn't post pictures of. I think that <A> is the bayonet ground assembly - PN 013-0052-00, and <D> is the center pin - PN 214-0325-00. I do not see either listed in the P6201 manual, nor in the manuals for the P6202 or P6202A. <B> seems to fit a wide range of probes, basically any of the compact or miniature modular probes, but I definitely found it listed in the manuals for the P6010/P6011/P6012. There are also other parts, that I didn't post pictures of, that also go with these probes. <G> and <J> seem to be another kind of ground lead for the P6056/P6057 (also <B> appears to be a part for these probes too), but maybe also for the P6202A (it's hard to know, I'm just going by the pictures; I don't have part numbers for any of these small parts), and they probably fit any compact or miniature modular probes too. -- Jeff Dutky |
There are some excellent diagrams on pages 330-333 of the 1991 Tek catalog showing which probe accessories go with which probes for all the standard probes that were current at the time.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything that matches the C springs. They may belong to an older style of probe. |
Is it possible that the parts 'C' will go over the barrel of something like

Hi Jeff, |
A is a short-path-to-ground accessory for the P6201, definitely not for the P6008.
B is a standard short-ground-connection clip, usable for almost all 6mm probes. D is a replacement spring-loaded pin, extending a bit further towards the point to be measured, as visible on A. F is a 206-0200-00: a replaceable probe tip for the P6201. G are ground wires (short and long), usable for most 6 mm probes and (AFAIK) a standard accessory for P6056/57. Raymond |
Hi Raymond and Jeff,
Raymond you are right. I magnified the picture and then the screw thread is clearly visible. The 131-5336-01 Part didn't have a screw thread. By the way my late P6201 (B082552) has this part not gold plated and also its collet is less thick. Looks like it is made of stainless steele. Same tip on both attenuators and as spares. Raymond,
The reasons that I suspect that <A> is an accessory for P6008 are: 1. the same lot of odds and ends contained a sealed Tek bag of accessories, that appears to have the same part in it along with others (the longer spring-loaded pin and several screw-on tips) that are also loose in the lot. I have uploaded a picture ( /g/TekScopes/photo/259732/0?p=Created,,,20,2,0,0 ) of the sealed bag and the loose parts for comparison. 2. Exactly this collection of parts appears in figure 1-1 in the P6008 instruction manual ( ) 3. I can't find any mention of this part in the P6201 instruction manual ( ) I am happy, of course, to be corrected on any or all of these points. -- Jeff Dutky |

Hi Jeff, You're right, it's absolutely meant for / suited to the P6008. I couldn't imagine, because of the relatively small BW (still 100 MHz) of the P6008, so some series inductance wouldn't harm so much and Tek didn't provide low-inductance clips as standard for many 100 MHz and even higher BW probes, and it perfectly fits the P6201 as well: I have 4 as-new P6201's, in original cassette, complete with accessories and - yes - I had to add the low-inductance thingy myself... Also, the (screw-on) accessories in the sealed plastic bag in your photograph all suit the P6008, not the P6201. So, you were right, although <A> fits the P6201 as well. A possible clue: The pin <D> in your picture is longer than the pin in <A>. The probe input pin on the P6201 extends less far than the screw-on sharp pin of the P6008 in your sealed accessories bag. Interesting! <C> may be the "official" low-inductance ground clip for the P6201. Raymond |
