The 7J20 / J20 Rapid Scan Spectrometer (RSS) is based on a Czerny-Turner Monochromator. It consisted of the following components: 1) The 7J20 is the plugin for the 7000 scope (any 7000 scope). It contains the on screen readouts (quite complex for this plugin, several power supplies, control electronics, horizontal sweep circuits, and vertical amplifier circuits. 2) The J20 is the optical head which contains the slit, diffraction gratings, Vidicon tube, Vidicon signal preamplifier, vidicon deflection circuits, output normalizer, with a Service Manual. 3) a 19 pin cable connects the 7J20 to the J20 4) A typical Tek Service Manual 5) There is one variation of the instrument which has an External Normalizer console (016-1000-00). I know of only one of those in existence. This console plugs into the 7J20 plugin and it eliminates the need for the two normalizer PC boards that are in the J20 head. It allows you to tailor the response curve of the Vidicon tube. 6) Optical probe heads (there were two) were optional. There was a ring, similar to a camera lens ring, that they clicked into on the J20 head. They do not come with the instrument as far as I know. I have never seen any and I don't use them. But they would be useful in certain circumstances when you were limited by how close you could position a sample to the instrument, or when safety was a concern. So few of these instruments were made that I have noticed unique modifications made to individual ones which must have been done as came off the assembly line. I have spotted several errors in the schematics of Service Manual as well. This was clearly a work in progress. The designer, Phil Scherer (not sure of the spelling), passed away a long time ago. The only description of it that appeared in a Tek catalog can be found here: Dennis Tillman W7PF -----Original Message-----

A complete system contains of (as far as I know) the 7J20 (7000 Series Plug-In), the J20, an Umbilical Cord and the Optical Probe Head. Enjoy, Egge Siert ------------------------------------ Posted by: eggeja2@... ------------------------------------ |

Yes as far as I know, but because reflections come from many directions simultaneously it might be hard to control. Light would be coming in from all directions resulting many overlapping signals each with different color content. What is can specifically do is measure the absorption of light passing through a sample of liquid. There you have one liquid substance at a time so your experiment is more tightly controlled.
