7904 Power supply
Mark,
Are those the large screw mount cans? I restuffed the ones in my 7854 with 1200uF Epcos caps. I used Chipquik SMDAL solder paste to tin the AL strips and bond copper wires to them. $20 2¡± tubing cutter from Menards to split the can, torch to free the contents. Hot glue to pot it and B7000 to glue the can shut. Best of luck!! Brian |
I've only had to do a re-stuff once or twice on these 950 uF, 200V computer style caps, for 7904 long ago. They are easy to take apart by un-crimping the can from the base, then installing fresh, newer, larger (in uF, but smaller physically), better performance units inside. I've junked out a few others, and even set aside spares-in-advance - some empty cans and bases plus fresh caps to go inside if ever needed. If you don't like the idea of fitting a new cap in the original can, you can just pick a modern type that's smaller, and tack it in, but then you need to support it mechanically. The fitting is trivial otherwise. I think it's easiest and best to re-use the cans.
For compatibility of the aluminum base terminals to solderable cap leads, you can easily drill through and tap the bottoms of the 10-32 holes to 4-40 or whatever smaller threads in the remaining material, then add solder lugs inside for attachment. Ed |
I'd think that if you just want to find "exact" replacements, it should be easy to find them at one- or two-off quantities, and a little pricier. When searching, use the term "computer grade" to get quicker results. Way back when (maybe 1960s), this meant these heavy duty, high quality parts suitable for computers and other large and expensive equipment. Nowadays, it's a misnomer, since most computers tend to use the cheapest parts that are just enough to get the job done, but those old type parts are still made. They're for higher grade uses in all sorts of applications, and fairly expensive. The screw terminals allow for easy change-outs too. Good luck in finding some.

After a lot of searching I decided on this one from Mouser 594-MAL220212152E3 a little smaller but will give enough room to fabricate some mounting to the PC board
