Re: TDS-420 SMPS
Sorry to resume an old thread, hoping to help.. I had the same startup problem on my TDS420 PSU; after a bit the psu would turn on correctly and continue to work until next day.
Next day the psu wasn't starting again; protection was kicking in every 1-2 seconds. The main problem was caused from the overcurrent protection; even without load, the protection would kick in. I've disabled the protection (risky, i know) and now it works correctly. Let me know if you need more details. |

Re: Relay for modern scope needed
You may be able to find a substitute in a different brand. Check this out from Omron:
I used some SMT dual-coil latching Aromat relays for a similar application (50-100 MHz 1Mohm attenuator environment) about twenty years ago - I think they were in the TQE series, and a little bigger than your relay, but they probably have smaller ones nowadays, and should have single-coil versions. I need manuals for an FG 504, TM5006, AA501, PS5010, SG502, PS503A, DM502A, DC504 and FG 501A, practically every piece of test gear in my shop! Only have the manual for my SC 502, which really helped me fix it went it stopped working! thanks

Have you looked for the through hole version? If it is stocked, you could bend the leads out to SMT the relay.

Re: TEk 475 removing replacing big electrolythics
Thank you for all you replies, its great to know i'm not alone in my adventure into Tek scope repair.
I have got two caps out so far using 2 soldering irons, (may have to use the hacksaw for the others though) only the pads have been damaged, i've tacked two 4700uf temporary caps and jumpered around the 3 can connections. The -8v, -15V and +50v supplies are now ok in one respect ie DC, the + 110 is only 80V though and I have a 1v ptp ac waveform showing the smoothing action (1ms sweep charging discharging sawtoothlike) I've wondered if the large silver sprague caps can simply be replaced with smaller similar valued caps, is there a quality factor or some other parameter that you pay for with the direct replacements? Maybe cosmetically or mechanically? Got my cool capacitor checker from china that confirms my caps are caput! I'm now contemplating removing boards to get at the back of the mainboard to check the tracks as I can't find the pcb layout's. has anyone ever looked at the 475 psu area from the underside, save me risky venture!? Thanks Guys Alan |

Spit and bubblegum and 2467 performance verification?
Hey y'all,
I'd like to do a full perf verification and possibly calibration of my 2467 - I'm pretty sure I messed her up a bit during and after the repairs I did. Also, I'd like to know that I can do this in the eventuality of her losing the NVRAM. I have some of the gear listed, like a pair of SG503/504. Other gear I have handy are a PG501, and an FG503 that I've recently overhauled. I also have access to a Siglent DDS function gen that goes to 3MHz. In addition to those, I have my handy-dandy 2430, whose vertical "deflection" is calibrated against my Fluke 87, and whose horizontal is referenced against its internal crystal oscillator. So, I figure I could set up the required test signals measured against the 2430, and use them to test/calibrate the 2467. I also have my TDS784D (the truck), and while I don't trust her calibration particularly, I can at least use her as a frequency counter above the 2430's bandwidth. I suppose I can also measure her vertical against DC inputs to see where she's at - the horizontal shouldn't be in question? In high-res mode she goes to 15bit resolution, which is a couple of orders of magnitude above the +/-2% deflection accuracy of the 2467. Now, it looks like the time marks for the horizontal go from .5s to 2ns. On a PG506, the 5/2/1ns outputs are a sine wave anyway, and I figure the FG504 can supply that, so long as I can measure it accurately enough to the correct frequency. The lower frequencies are not a problem for the PG501, though I wonder how stable the output of the PG501 is going to be. I figure it'll probably be stable enough as the 2467's sweep is all analog anyway? It looks like for the vertical, the calibration voltages go from 20mV to 10V peak-to-peak, which shouldn't be a problem for the FG503 (or the Siglent). One thing I know is missing is transient response, as I don't think any of the gear I have access to has a fast enough "known" edge to measure that against. What else am I missing - if anything? TDS 420 Firmware Update
Hi,
this is my first post in this group. I'm searching for the firmware update package for my TDS 420. I've bought it as used on ebay, and was not working. After repairing the PSU, replacing all caps, fixing all broken traces.. the scope is up & running again. The fw version in this scope is v1.3; it's quite old, it doesn't even have rolling mode option, nor fft (option 2f). I know that option FFT should be bought as separate option.. but this fw version doesn't have it implemented! I've examined a bit how firmware works, and i'm confident that i'll be able to write a program to upgrade firmware directly through debug rs232 port. The main problem now is.. that i don't have the updated firmware! :) I've requested to join the other two "arc" groups, waiting for approval; meanwhile i've searched in this group without results. As soon as i can update the firmware, i'll post instruction here. FYI here is the thread on tek site regarding my fw findings on tds420 Tektronix Forum ?
