Another horror story

Denis Cobley

Had a job about 10 years ago which was much worse.
We were sent a 492 & TM5006 mainframe full of plug-in's.
It have been in a service car - a station wagon (estate in the UK) and the Tech had run into a tree.
The 2 items had become missiles and punched through the tech.
The units were full of bits of meat and congealed blood but the company wanted to recover the instruments.
I had the most unpleasant job of stripping and cleaning every part of the units and getting them operational.
The smell was not good - not something you wanted to be doing just after lunch.
Both instruments are back in service and looking for their next victim.
There is a lesson here for those who do not secure heavy equipment in cars or vans.
I also had one just like the other one - tailgate flew open around a corner and the scope made a break for it!
Had a unit sent back to Tek in Beaverton once - run over by a 747 front wheel - ended up about 1" thick - Tek said it was my problem as once it left them I carried the risk.
Of course the carrier said it was also not their problem either so we had to carry the can on that one with the customer.
Strange things happen in this world.

Denis Cobley

I owned one of these. The PC boards are all plated with gold.
I used to ppen it up and show the gold in it to all my friends.
You can even see it in the pictures. This was one of the last
scopes where Tek did this. It was made before gold skyrocketed
in the early 70's.
Someone with a sharp eye is going to buy this and scrap it for the gold.

Tunnel Diode for 1S1

Gregor Lasser

Hello!
I'm new to the list and I have quite a trouble with a 1S1 Sampling plug-in I
bought at ebay! While I was cleaning the plug-in I found a Tunnel Diode with
one of its "legs" broken off. I unsoldered it just to see that the second
leg was also defective. Does anyone know where to find this tunnel diode? It
is D304 in the 1S1, Manual says:
D304 152-0214-00 TD252 4,7mA . Is there any source for this diode, or is
there a possible substitution?
Thank you all in advance
Gregor Lasser

Tek Custom hybrids

Craig Sawyers

Hi all

Mark Kahrs has a really useful list on his site of custom Tek hybrids and
which 7xxx series scope and plug-in they are used in (
). I've added a
bunch of information to this on instruments that I have the manuals for.
I've passed that to Mark so that when he gets a spare picosecond his site
can be updated.

If anyone is interested in a copy in the meantime, let me know.

Hello,
I am sending this in hopes that a fellow Texan in the group may know of any swap meets. Preferrably near San Antonio or Austin, even Dallas. All I can find here in San Antonio are "flea markets" where the most "high tech" devices sold are statues of Buddha. Although I think Buddha is kinda cool, I am looking for Tek equipment.
The worst part is that I found a federal & state surplus outlet 3 miles from my house that has 'scopes for $20-$80.00. But they are sold only to other agencies, or some types of non-profit groups. Please! Does anyone know of a place or annual event, anything? I will drive 300 miles, if needed.
Thanks in advance,

Tek 422 Trace problem

Recently acquired a Tek 422 that may have a problem with the trace
brightness. As the Intensity control is rotated from off (full CCW)
to about midrange the trace will increase in brightness, but from
mid rotation to full CW, the brightness stays the same and the trace
losses focus and has what appears as another trace just slightly
shifted to the left. Is this an indication of a weak CRT, or some
component in the HV supply? Thanks!

manuals needed for DSA602

reteb1

Hi all,

I am new to this group.
This week my DSA602 will arrive and I need a bit of your help.

I need some manuals.
I got the tip to ask on this list for help of Dave DiGiacomo for
DSA602 manuals (*).
Could someone reference me to Dave ?
Or could someone help me or reference me to other manual sources ?
I searched in vain in the archive.

I am told this DSDA602 is a great gear, but it seems strictly
compulsory te use the manuals to enjoy this DSA's full power.
In particular to have the DSA computer controlled thru IEEE 488.

Thanks,

I am looking for a good reliable used Tek scope to learn on and use
for amateur radio repairs. I see many up for sale on eBay and would
welcome any advice on which I should consider, and which should be
avoided due to common problems, or inavailability of parts. I would
like to spend up to $200, but would possibly consider going as high
as $350 if there is a compelling reason to do so. Thanks in advance

Re: 7D20 RAMS

I had something similar with my 7D01, except that RAMs were from even lower
layer of Pleistocene, they were 1 K capacity. Surprisingly, I was able to
find RAMs at the local junker store and price was not too unreasonable.

It is interesting that sequence of fixing resembled closely what Fred
described: first replacement did not work, but second chip did. Then, I put
back the original chip and that worked, so I concluded that problem was with
those 'low bidder' sockets that Tektronix' accountants liked to buy for
instruments that had lot of DIPs. The sockets looked like infamous TI
products, but judging from age of the plug-in, I would say, it came after TI
fixed flux wicking.

Subject: [TekScopes] 7D20 RAMS

Hi All,

Today I fixed my 7D20, it had come up with an error, (fail 531). A
closer look in the manual pointed to U710, a dynamic RAM (4116) from
the prehistoric ages.

All RAMS on the memory board where from ITT, date code 8232 and 8237
and had also a white 'TEK' marking.

I replaced the bad chip with one from a scrap TEK 9100 logic
analyser, also an ITT chip, and made me wonder, because this chip
gave me exactly the same error.... So was it perhaps something else ?
However a 9100 has 16 4116 so I took an other one, this time an NEC
one with a white TEK marking... And this seemed to be working fine.

This made me curious and I started to test them all. I found three
other ITT chips which were bad, non of the NEC or Mostek chips
failed.

Could it be that the ITT chips are of inferior quality, or is the
chip OK and is this a timing problem in the design of th 7D20 ?. I
must say, that the scrap 9100 was also failing due to a bad uP
board, the cause is still unknown.

Here are the error codes and their chips associated in case you have
a similar issue with the RAMS.

Dynamic RAMS 4114

53 U810

532 U610

Static ones

Re: 7D20 RAMS

4116 RAMs did not have completely standard refresh requirements. The RAMs that fail probably need to work with a different refresh controller.
