What is this soft metal, and is it toxic?

John Griessen

It's parts of a plasma etcher that are in the high vacuum area. The ceramic plate had wafer lifting pins and was bonded
to a thick aluminum plate with low temp metal brazing.

I can gouge it easily at a temperature of 60 deg F and the tool feels sticky. A push and twist captures the tool and holds its
cantilevered weight.

Could this be Woods metal? Gallium? Toxic Mercury Cadmium Lead amalgam?

I am thinking it must have been stable in vacuum with some warm temperatures when the etcher was running...

Re: 7854 readout and stored waveform jitter

Hi Fred,
Look up the part numbers for U620 and U1720 in the service manual.
Then we can check the Tek Semiconductor Common Parts Catalog and find out what they are.

Hi Fred,
We share a love of the 7854. I have a few troubleshooting related
questions and suggestions of my own:
It sounds you have isolated the problem to the display board.
As Raymond Domp Frank already suggested, remove and reseat ALL contacts
to break oxides.
Is there any chance this is an intermittent problem?
If this is an intermittent problem is it temperature sensitive - you can
probably test this with a hair dryer and a can of FreezIt.
Is this jitter present the moment the CRT warms up from being powered
off overnight? That would be a clue its temp sensitive.
At this point my favorite tool is a can of FreezIt with a thin tube to
reach into difficult places.
My first test is to use FreezIt to freeze everything on the entire board
hoping that momentarily cures the problem or alters it's behavior in
some way. If that happens I proceed to the next step after the board has
a chance to warm up again.
Now I spray FreezIt locally in different areas to narrow down the
search.
Finally I start freezing individual ICs, semiconductors, and tantalum
caps hoping to get a reaction from one of them.

Dennis Tillman W7PF

I replaced all electrolytics on the display board, checked the
inductors, but no change.
Probed +15V1, -15V1, +15V2 and -15V2, everything is fine. The only
components common to horizontal and vertical outputs are U620 and U1720,
but I don't have replacements at the moment. The problem is not
intermittent, the jitter frequency is a only couple of Hertz. Tried the
freeze spray, no sensitivity. Could it be that the start time of the
readout/stored waveform is jittery? What's the mechanism that starts the
readout?

Best regards,

Fred S.

Re: Viewing hood part number for 7000 series scopes

Hi Gary,

If you're looking for one of these I have one I don't need.
You can have it for $20 + $15 shipping instead of the $50 + $30 shipping this one is listed for.
CONTACT ME OFF LIST if you (or anyone else) wants it at dennis at ridesoft dot com.

Re: Tektronix Blue paint - source in the UK ??

Thanks for the tips - there is a local "auto paint matching" service
that I will try, though if the minimum quantity is a gallon it's gonna
be donkey's years before I use it all !!

BTW I did search the group.io but was unable to find much re the UK -
perhaps it was lost in the "clutter" ;-)

564B Mod121 with 3A3, 3B3 and 3L5. Was used extensively before I got a 7L5.
Quite often I had it coupled with my 7854 to get proper storage
capabilities.
I still remember its razor sharp CRT, I'd say it's one of the sharpest I've
ever seen, been showing the tiniest details you could see only thru a
magnifier glass.

Re: Tektronix Blue paint - source in the UK ??

A few years ago I took a very nice Tek Williamsburg Blue case to an established paint store here in Orange County, CA.? They had a spectrograph and came up with this formula.? The owner said it is readable by any paint store.? I bought a gallon and it was a perfect match.? It is not water based so it can be thinned to use in a spray gun.

I would imagine that the black used would be 4+22/48 ounces or 4.458 ounces and the yellow oxide would be 33/48 or .688 ounces.

Re: "I wonder how many members here have a 564" Dave V.

I has 4 564 (one R564B w MOD121, 2x 564B, 1x 564), two from 4 is already sold.

One 564B has 3T2, 3S2, with S4 Sampling head, Plug-in is moved to 567 and 564B is sold. Because, i am interessing only on Sampling plugin.
Other 3 has 3A6 and 3B3. Not very interessing, but it is very cheap or a donate for me.
R564B is with unreliable 3T77A & 3S76

@David Holland, i has only 3A5 with grey face (it is seeing by TekWiki ())
Found other grey 3B5 is nearly impossible, i think.

Re: Tektronix Blue paint - source in the UK ??

Craig Sawyers

Has anyone discovered a source of this paint in the UK ?

Getting it from abroad is tricky because of postal regulations.

Dave
Does no-one bother check the archives? I went through precisely this exercise in the UK and sourced
Tek blue paint, with the right degree of mattness, matched from a colour sample sprayed with paint
from Tektronix.

I even bought a load of the stuff in spray cans with the offer to sell it to guys just like you - and
got very little response. So I've been using it up restoring my sizable stable of Tek gear.

So, call up and buy some. They still have the formulation.

Craig

Viewing hood part number for 7000 series scopes

My manuals do not list a part number for the viewing hood for any of my 7000 series oscilloscopes. Someone out there must know a Tek part number. Please help.

Re: Tektronix Blue paint - source in the UK ??

Yes, and the file /g/TekScopes/files/Tek%20Paints.pdf in the Tekscopes files area has the manufacturer numbers from the Tek paint reference.

A search of the Tekscopes message archive should turn up the actual paint formula for the Tektronix color, from which you might be able to have the paint mixed locally.
I realize the environmental laws are changing quickly around the world, but you may even be able to have this paint put in spray cans where you live.
Shops that supply the paint to automotive body repair businesses might be one place that can help you.

Krylon Baham Sea is very close. If you take a part that has the color many
automotive paint stores can match it.

Re: Tektronix Blue paint - source in the UK ??

Roy Morgan

Tekscope painters,

A fellow in the US has developed paint formulas for many amateur radio cabinets. Here is part of a recent message from him. I have asked him if he has any Tektronix paid formulas (there are none in his online list). Likely some paint supply store in the UK can ¡°computer match¡± the cabinet color if you bring it in to them.

I have not had a need for the paint for the KWM-380. What I do, when I need a new paint color, is to take the cabinet to my local Sherwin-Williams store and have it "computer matched". At least at my local store, so far, the match has been "perfect"! Then, I get, usually, a quart of the paint.

(He uses a spray gun to apply the paint. Some stores can make a spray can from a formula.)
