stuff, and yes, I know what it is. The Tek S-3260 is a very large computer controlled system for testing integrated circuits. It is vintage about 1975 or so. Some of the options for the S3260 included a 568 scope with 3S6 and 3T6 sampling plugins for making some very fast risetime measurements on the IC under test. The S3260 was capable of handling large scale ICs with up to 64 pins in its largest configuration (they may have even made larger ones than that). Any way, the 568/3T6/3S6 is only a two channel sampling system so how do you look at 64 IC pins with only two channels? The answer is that you multiplex the two channels to all 64 pins. How do you do that without losing all the fast capability of the sampling system? The answer is that you locate the sampling heads (S1's in this case) as physically close to the IC pins as you can and dedicate one S1 to each IC pin and multiplex the S1's to the two 3S6 channels. The multiplexing is done in groups of up to four sampling heads plugged into a 286 Sampling Head Multiplexer. If your system needs more than four sampling heads multiplexed, you can multiplex up to four 286's with one 288, for a total of up to 16 sampling heads. Still not enough sampling heads? OK, you can slave up to three 287's to one 288, each one loaded with four 286's, with each of those 286's loaded with up to four sampling heads, for a grand total of 64 sampling heads multiplexed. All of this is explained with pictures on page 251 of your 1973 Tektronix Catalog . . . The multiplexers (286's, 287's, and 288's) are not particularily valuable today (except as maybe an addition to my collection!) since they are only one component of a large S3260 system and you don't have the rest of it, like the DEC PDP-11 computer, the Tek 1340 Interface Units, and the necessary software to control it all. The S1's however, are the gold at the end of this rainbow! The 1989 Tek Catalog lists S1 Sampling Heads available from Tek new at a cost of $1695 each! (And you got 23 of them for $2.25 . . . ! ! not to mention the 286's, etc.) Anyway, those same sampling heads are useful in the 3S2, 7S11, 7S12 and a few other sampling plugins. So, if those sampling heads actually work, you should be able to get at least 1000 times your money back . . . but you would really need to check them out first to expect that kind of return. You say you don't know how to check them out? OK, so I will give you ten times your money right now and I'll check them out . . . how about that! 8-) I took a look at the picture of the stuff you bought and I actually counted 55 sampling heads in the picture. You could always complain to the seller that you thought you were getting everything shown in the picture and you expect to recieve all 55 sampling heads . . . ! ! (Then you should be able to get 2000 times your money ! ! ) Surely this detailed explanation is worth one sampling head and not just a crumby old useless S3260 compensator card, right? Hi, all. I just purchased a "Tektronix Multiplexer Control Unit",
for the huge sum of $2.25. (I guess no one else was paying attention, at the time! (Ebay, last night!)) It includes 23 individual S-1 Sampling Heads plugins, which I think I am somewhat familiar with. But, it also includes 32 individual "S-3260/Mod 20 Compensator" plugins. I have NO IDEA what these are, and can't seem to find ANY information with web searches. I am hoping to help finance my Tek scope lust, with this windfall. I know the sampling heads are worth a little something. But I haven't a clue as to the usefulness of the compensators... Does anyone know what these are good for? (First good answer gets a free Compensator plugin, post-paid...!) Thanks!! Tom Gootee tomg@... |

It looks like you are doing all of the right things to get permission. I have just never heard of Tektronix granting such permission. Has Tek actually responded to you with written permission to publish some of their copyrighted material on the web? I would be surprised if they did . . . If they have given you written permission, I would certainly like to know since I have asked and been denied permission for a few things I would like to publish. of course you're right! I have a writed permission from Tek for non-profit copying. I also contacted all other companies mentioned at me homepage. Most will understand the internet as a "copy-and-paste-all-free" collection. But I thing all material should be published with permission from the authors. And most of them will agree for our purposes. Stefan -----Urspr???ngliche Nachricht----- Von: Stan or Patricia Griffiths <w7ni@...> An: <TekScopes@...> Gesendet: Montag, 9. without their written permission. When I wrote my book, I got official written permission from Tektronix to use pictures from their old catalogs in my book. Since their old catalogs are copyrighted, official written permission is required. It is true that there are individuals and companies who have been copying Tek copyrighted material for years and getting away with it but it is definitely not legal. On a few special occasions in the past, I believe Tek has given permission to the U.S. Military to copy parts of certain specific manuals, but I don't believe they have given permission to any individual or company to ever copy entire manuals, catalogs, or other technical materials that Tek produces. I have also heard that some individuals have asked permission from Tek to copy some of their Concept Books and they have been specifcally denied permission to do the copies. Tek has shown more interest recently in illegal copies of their stuff. I just wouldn't do it without Tek's permission if I were you . . . and I would not accept permission from the local Sales Office either. Real permission must come from the Tektronix Legal Department in Beaverton, OR. Stan w7ni@... Hi there,
in between I reworked my online museum. All visitors are welcome again at . You'll find there some service documents about Tek instruments. Maybe someone (Stan ?!) can check for errors or so. I also have a large assortment of spare parts (like the 556 final tubes) - but remember: I'm located in Germany. I will not comment any replys as I'm on buisness trip for the next two weeks. If someone has interesting material which should be published for all of us, please let me know if you have no possibility for an own homepage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To Stan: Did you remember all the stuff about the 551/555 interconnection cable? Do you have any backups? It would be a great help for me - otherwise I have to check the whole stuff once more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a friend of mine (who will also get this message) who obtains an online Tek-only museum too. At the moment he scanned some of his and mine Tek catalogs, and I will convert them to pdf files. If the stuff is available on CD-ROM we'll let you know. Check his collection at That's all for now. Have a good electron glow! Stefan |

1S1 repair news :-)
Michael Dunn
Yoohoo. I'm making progress repairing my 1S1 1GHz sampling plug-in. The biggest problem was a kaput power supply filter cap - totally dead - well, many, many kohms ESR. Replaced the big old can with a part about 1/6 the volume, yet almost twice the capacitance, and much better quality to boot! Semiconductors aren't the only technology that's improved in the last 35 years!
Also paralleled the smaller final power supply output stability caps with new ones, again much smaller, yet more C's! As for the six missing GaAs diodes in the sampling bridge and elsewhere, I got some SMT Schottky diodes as hopeful subs. The unit is now working somewhat - there are some triggering and offset problems. But, with the right settings and input, I can get a valid trace!!! Whether these probs are a result of the Schottkys, I don't yet know. All I can say is, it's VERY cool to scroll over a 200MHz waveform at 35ps/div! (yes, 35ps. 0.035ns!) Though a bit useless, as the risetime of the thing is *only* about 300ps... |

Tube(s) needed

Hi. Does anyone have any 8608 tubes? (med power pentodes with plate cap, used for vertical deflection on some Tek scopes (eg, 556, 549))
I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount for 1 or several, but not an exorbitant price. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Dunn | Surround Sound Decoder & Stereo Enhancement Cantares | Self-Amplified Speakers, Test Equipment 74 George St. | Ambisonic Surround Sound CDs and Recording Waterloo, Ont. | (519) 744-9395 (fax: 744-7129) N2J 1K7 | mdunn@... Tek parts, tubes, etc.
walter shawlee
hi,
we have a lot of tek parts and tubes, CRT's etc. for 5000/7000 and some 400 series units. you can browse through what's sorted and on line at: To help with repairs, there is also a CRT cross reference, and tek part number to JEDEC cross reference for many 1N/2N and IC parts. In the tube section, we do have some tek special tubes, selected by whatever mysterious criteria they thought was important, as well as some commonly needed Tek tubes like 7119's etc. for the generators, and some nuvistors for the older 400 series scopes. sadly, we can't be much help with older tube 500 series scopes, except for CRT's and some miniature HV rectifier tubes, and 6080's. we also have the tek cross reference data to 1984 for semis, and can help with some items not listed on oline for cross-reference data, but these requests are done as we have time, so be patient. In the NEW ARRIVALS section, we also just got dozens of Tek precision capacitor kits for time bases and generators, if you need them. I will add a link to this mail list into the Tek section later this month as well. Anybody in Canada may also be interested in the fact we will be moving shortly, and will have a lot of older Tek scrap we have to get rid of. shipping is reasonable within Canada for that kind of stuff, so might be useful to somebody. all the best, walter walter2@... |

'Great' is said with a wink to size and weight... The 453 is not a 'great' scope. :) Secondly, I specifically did not want to include transistorized Tek scopes in the museum because the interest in those is even larger than the interest in the tube scopes. Doing a question-and-answer session with all the thousands of happy users of 5000, 7000, 453, 454, 465, 475, 485 users around the world is not what I set out to do... But of course.... If I had a 453, it would not be for sale... :) Regards, Arnoud. -----Original Message----- |
