Re: OT: The analog computer lives on
There seems to be a resurgence in analog computer interest. I bought an EAI
TR-20 years ago surplus. It came with extra patch boards but few patch cables. It's a beast - weighs over 100 pounds but so far I have not used it. I do have a smaller, lighter "hybrid" Comdyna. It has both an analog computer and a digital one in the same rack. It weighs a lot less. The TR-20 will likely need work before powering it up - old capacitors and the like. The Comdyna is much more recent and works fine though I've only done some minimal programming for it. I jumpered together an integrator and differentiator to try things out. This is where having a scope is useful to look at the output. I have not used the digital side. Some of these old EAI machines are fetching a surprisingly high price. A friend of mine has one and he rebuilt the power supply. He also had to rebuild some of the analog processing modules. He got it working and uses it as a music synthesizer (though he also has an old Moog and a much less common Buchla). He had two Moog synths but sold one. One of the first things he programmed on the TR-20 was a chaos generator. The "waveform" he generated looked exactly like this: Well, without the measurements on the waveform. Steve H. Tektronix THS700A Series Board Components layout
Working my way thru a couple of THS700A models the THS720A and THS730A, has anyone found or possibly made a partial or complete component layout for these units. It seems pretty complex with components on 2 sides of the board. I have the schematics downloaded from TEK Wiki. But sifting thru the component layout I haven't been too successful in figuring out all capacitor and resistors actual locations.

Re: CG5011 Self Test Start-Up - Relay Freakout
Thanks for the reply Eric. I have both part 1 and part 2 of the service manual from Artekmanuals and while it does describe the Start-up/Self-test it several different spots (first time operation, programming section, and theory of operation), nowhere did I see the manual emphasize this step of exercising the relays. But I will take your word for it. Thanks!

Re: CRT
Bonjour cher Monsieur bienvenu a liste Tekscopes.
When working on CRTs, BEWARE of implosion hazard, wear gloves, face shield, eye protection as they my implode at any time. These CRT are available but shipping is an issue as easy to damage unless packed in original TEK CRT box. Try Qservice in Greece, who may have it. Also ask Menachem at Condor Audio in Israel. Finally we think its easier to just find another scope eg at a Ham Radio marche au puces, as replacement of CRT may need complete recalibration. Bon chance, amicalement, Jon |

CG5011 Self Test Start-Up - Relay Freakout
Hey y'all! I am still working on this CG5011 with an interesting fault symptom - in 'Volt' mode, it basically AC couples the DC+/DC- frequency mode signals up to ~10V. Then at 10V, it starts displaying a DC signal except it is only ~1VDC. But it will add to that DC signal in the correct voltage increment. For example, changing the div multipler from 1 to 2, the voltage will change from 1VDC to 11VDC. Set div multipler to 3 and it will change to 21V and so on and so forth.
Anyway, I wanted to ask owners of the CG5011 if during start-up does their do what I refer to as the 'relay freakout'. After you power it on, 'Self-test' will appear on the display. Immediately after that, I hear a bunch of relays in quick succession clicking. And then it completes the self-test successfully. My question is, is this normal for the CG5011? Does it always do this? Or should I be using this as a clue. I've already tested every single relay on the A7 board and they all work/tested fine. I've been documenting my repairs on my YouTube videoblog and I've recorded the start-up many times. If you start this video (linked here ) at 30:32 you can hear the relays during the start-up. Just want to know if this is normal or not. This is the problem with attempting to repair equipment I've never worked with before. Things like this have the potential to send me down rabbit holes... Thanks in advance! -Frank -Frank |
Re: Which Torx Size must I buy to refurberish someTM5000 Series Relais
Eggie,
Nice! That set is much better than what I have. I just have some generic small size bit kit I got from Amazon - very cheap. But it does come in handy. I need to get something a bit more quality because a few of the bits just get warped or break. Just be careful using a torx on a hex drive - it can strip the screw even worse. or damage the bit if you use cheap ones like me lol. -Frank |
Re: Tek 2465 power supply cycling
See this: and also in my book Tektronix volume 2 you can find several notes on 2465 and similar PSU repair (free on www.k100.biz).
But I agree with Harvey: you should try to investigate what exactly fails and if the inverter runs or what. Remember that the inverter part is with live ground, you need an insulation transformer. And never forget the extra fans if you switch it on outside the box. Another ideas is trying to operate it at lower voltage with a Variac. Remember that the TL594 can be tested also without switching on the main supply, with an external power supply. Does the unit restart automatically when shut off? |
