Frequency Counter for Tracking Generator
After acquiring a TR-503 tracking generator for my 492 spectrum analyzer, I was on the lookout for a DC508A counter with the proper option as an add-on. But in time I realized I have several counters that can be connected to the TR-503's auxiliary output to accurately display frequency, so I dropped the idea. But the other day I saw an ad for this $18.95, eight-digit 2.4 GHz counter found at that looked like it might serve as the basis of a dedicated counter if a suitable crystal time-base could be added. Looking on the usual auction site, it appeared these counters are available there for even less.
It was kind of alarming to read that a VCO is being used as a time-base. Also, they mentioned a divide-by-64 function being used for higher frequencies; so it is not clear whether, in that range, the counter displays actual frequency or that divided by 64. Anyway, I thought this might possibly be of interest to others for incorporation in projects. Has anyone investigated these?
I have no connection with the seller, other than having bought parts from them.

[email protected], hp9845.net and other places have lots of info about these drives and tapes. The tapes tend to physically lose their coating and the polyurethane drive capstans crumble or become chewing gum. I think you're lucky that things work at all! Repairs and mods for these drives are described in said places. You've probably got the plastibands suggestion from one of them. Raymond

Hi Monty,
There might be a few causes for this. The tape heads should be cleaned since that's the easiest thing to try. I am not familiar if demagnetizing them is also appropriate on occasion. The tape drive was probably bought from a manufacturer. If you can find the model number you may be able to locate a service manual for it that has information about routine cleaning and servicing.
The rubber capstan wheels are probably dried out causing the tape speed to wander. I think there are coatings that can be applied that make them more supple but it has been a while since I did anything like this.
Your tape may have bit rot. Nothing is permanent and bits can change when the magnetic media changes. This would vary due to how the tape was stored. You may be able to buy a replacement tape from the vintageTEK Museum.
I think there may be more members with 4041s on TekScopes. One of them might have a tape you can use.

Hi James-
I've had a 1401A for a long time and like it. Small, portable, battery option and while it mates up just right with a 323/etc, you can use it with any scope that has good X-Y capability. I've got a junker 32X scope or two and one of these days I'm gonna convert one of the power supply modules for operation without batteries so I can keep the 1401A on the bench without having to babysit the doggone nicads. That's been a mighty convenient option on my 1502 and 1503....

This sounds like a much more expensive and more time consuming solution than buying an Air Conditioner extension cord.
You should try the simple solution the next time. I think you find it is so simple you will use it every time from now on.

Does anyone have any experience with this BNC? Pressure fit connectors are normal for 75 ohm, this is for 50 ohm
Please note that the specs make use of a RG 223 iffy. The diameters of 223 are slightly larger than the specs of the connector.
Connector specs:
center pin: .0317-.0339
OD: .185-.201
Belden 223 specs:
center pin: .034
OD: .212
Belden RG 58 does fit the specs, but I would like to use something better, I normally use RG 223.
Any suggestions?

What frequency range would you like to cover?
Hameg made the model HM8028 which goes to 500 MHz and needs a (large) power supply frame and an external x-y display. It is fairly rare, having been soon replaced by the HM5005, HM5006, etc. which all had integrated displays.
