Yes, the guide seems to be lacking common sense. The comment measuring the line voltage (and frequency) brought a smile. I remember back 40 years or so ago an instructor at a well known university was attempting to show class the waveforms on a triac circuit. I walked out after he connected the scope ground to the hot line and tripped a breaker. Unfortunately, I missed the greater fun, when (I heard later) he managed to get himself connected to the hot side of the line while holding a grounded microphone. The mic went flying....

The suggestion that a scope can be used as an autoranging DMM does not apply for most of the scopes folks have in this group. None of the half dozen scopes I have are autoranging, connecting any of them to line voltage without careful understanding of settings and probe limits would likely result in damage.

Well this article assumes you know something about connecting a scope to a
live AC circuit. A differential probe is a great starting point. Also
using a battery powered scope and a making certain no path to ground
exists.

TM500 Mainframe common problems for each model?

 

Hi,

I have a number of TM500 mainframes here I'm working through restoring alongside my collection of modules and I've seem mention of each mainframe having certain quirks and things to look out for and replace etc.

Can anyone with experience with these units list off the common faults you've seen and improvements you've made for the different mainframes?
I currently have 3x TM501, a TM503, a TM503B and a TM5006.

The 4041 Utility ROMpack R04 manual on bitsavers has a couple of interesting rom calls:

  • Loadroms is a Soft ROMpack loader that could load ROMs from a file on tape or disk into memory (pg 1-1)
  • PROM File System allows ASCII or ITEM files to be read from PROMs as device name PROM0 which is read-only but supports all the BASIC commands other than SAVE (also on pg 1-1)

Two problems with the PROM file system - the Tektronix ROM Carriers are 'almost unobtainable' although I have found two different sources the price is over $50 for a single plastic cover with two EPROMs in the Molex carriers. Second problem is the PRMBLD and RMXFER are two BASIC programs that came with the 4041 "Accessory Kit" for programming 4041 PROMs. I can't find those programs :(

I think it would be relatively easy to make a 4041 ROM Drawer compatible circuit board that would emulate the ROM Drawer with larger EPROMs.

We just need the PRMBLD and RMXFER programs to create the 'tape' file for a PROM0.

The manual indicates on page 7-1 if the PROM0 contains an AUTOLD file, this file will automatically become the default SYSDEV device and the AUTOLD will be loaded automatically at power-up!

You get "different" email addresses (some obfuscated, some not) depending on whether or? not you read the list on the website or get individual emails.? I prefer individual emails, and thus I get the messages "uncensored".

IIRC, the website (both here and the old yahoo groups) censors the email addresses to make it harder to "harvest" the list for spam.

Thanx Monty. I will send the $30 off by PayPal today for the tape with all
of the 4041 programs. I am very surprised that the magnetic tapes become
unusable just because the belt pops off once. I would have thought that
the magnetic tape would maintain its flux coding for at least 10 years.
Apparently, all you need is one crease in the tape to render it useless. I
am surprised that Tektronix would use such a feeble technique for storing
programs.

I will be putting four NOS tapes into the dehydrator this morning to start
baking them for 2 days.

board mod to allow my USB to TTL serial adapter to be used with the
front
panel keyboard connector.

- Remove the 4041 two rear plastic "corners" securing the right panel
and

- I dipped my desolder braid in flux, place the braid on the pad and
apply
your hot soldering iron to the braid and resistor lead to suck the
solder
completely from the pad. Be sure to cut off the braid and apply fresh
flux
before desoldering the pad for each resistor.
- Unsolder and lift the 'left' side of the two resistors closest to the
unused J86 connector as shown in my resistor mod photo: [4041 Resistor

DDU 5 1/4" floppy, and to run the DDU service manual program to do
write
and read performance tests on the floppy.

I got 1117 Bytes per second, which meets the 1000 bytes per second
listed
in the floppy spec.

So my DDU SCSI controller and floppy drive are working and I've
ordered a
Seagate 40MB ST-506 drive to replace the failed Shugart drive.

I also noticed my new 4041 has a newer CPU board which includes the
memory
on the CPU board and also only has four EPROMs!

The 4041 service manual indicates 4041 serial numbers B070100 and above
have this CPU board.

The service manual also indicates two of the EPROMs contain 128KB of
system ROMs - 28KB more than the earlier CPU boards. I believe the
additional 28KB is the UTL2 ROM only available for these CPU boards.

The service manual indicates the Option 10 for this CPU board is the
two
additional 27256 EPROMs, which contain the R01 Graphics, R02 Plotting,
R03
Signal Processing, R04 Utility1 option ROMs, which leaves room in the
ROM
drawer for developer ROMs to be installed.

I ran the ASK$("ROMPACKS") command and got the list of all those option
ROMs and the UTL2.

I will capture the two Option EPROM images and post them on my 4041
github
repository sometime this weekend.

Gary,

I suspected since I didn't hear any tape motor that the capstan might be
stuck, so I used one of my 'tape tension wooden chopsticks" to gently try
to free up the drive capstan - and now the tape drive works with my tapes!

Since this 4041 likely came with this DDU - they may have never used the
tape drive - the head is nice and shiny.

I also fixed my printer - using the maintenance manual instructions: simply
turn the white plastic timing gear housing (which breaks the glyptol seal)
until the printout is ok.
I did that yesterday - now I need to get some nail polish to replace the
seal.
