Re: Russian Tunnel Diodes

FWIW there's a very nice 40 pS rise time 10 MHz square wave pulser at leobodnar.com. The BNC version is about $80 US. Leo has just developed a variant that produces 100 pS spikes.

Not germane to making a repair, but if the goal is having a fast step generator it's hard to beat. Each one is individually tested and a printout of the step response provided. Mine actually has a 36 pS rise time. Leo also has them with 3.5 and 2.92 mm connectors spec'd at 30 pS.

I covered mine with a large piece of heat shrink for protection.

There are photos in the group archives. Description somehow messed up during
the transfer from Yahoo but all the photos seem to be still there. Or you
can try to find them in abandoned Yahoo group if it still exists.

I understand entirely the interest in building TD pulsers, and replicating/repairing Tek ones.

But a bit of heresy - the Leo Bodnar pulsers produce 30ps rise, and around 24ps fall time. They come
with a calibration certificate too. For UKP49 to UKP99 depending on the output connector. Run from USB
power, from which you can adjust the amplitude from the app. They run at 10MHz with 2.5ppm accuracy,
so can be used for timebase checks too. I have the BNC version, which is the cheapest.

Now just what do I do if I have to display more than 12 waveforms at once ?
Ah - you can do that with a single 7844

Ha, Vincent, how apropos!? My wife and I are in the process of moving stuff out of her parents' house to sell it.? We went through the closet recently and found enough shoes to make Imelda Marcos envious!? Most probably never worn and some literally crumbling into dust!
As far as scopes goes, I'm at 4 but that is by no means the end of the story.? ?I'd like a 7854 to put my sampling plug-ins in and average out the noise and jitter, a CSA803 or 11801-11803 for 20 GHz+ sampling, parts mule 7603, 7854, 5110, HP 54504A,? and 7904, and maybe a USB DSO for the portability.? ?Maybe a 485 or 2465B/2567 to have a nice high-BW analog scope.? Something like that.?

7k extender to borrow in greater Montreal?

Hey y'all,

I've just acquired a 7T11. This one - unlike the last one - wasn't
pulverized in transport, and is in almost perfect mechanical shape. It
seems to mostly work, except I believe the triggering is in need of some
TLC. At first it didn't work at all, but after wiggling all the socketed
components on the trigger board, it seems to have started working again.

I wonder if there's anyone here in the frozen tundra of Montreal, Canada
that has a 7k plugin extender they'd be willing to lend me?

Looking for 604 XY monitor

I'm looking for a 604, my old one just bit the dust.. something in the HV supply keeps popping the 1AMP fuse.. it had previous problems with the +215 which i managed to repair but this is getting annoying so thinking it might be time for replacement

thanks!

Re: How Many Scopes?

I too had to draw the line somewhere, and it was also with the portables.? Somewhere north of 80, with no 2xxx or 4xx scopes.??
I almost bought a 535(I think) plus cart, CA, 1L10 and 1S2 for $35 at an estate sale a month ago, but another guy bought it out from under me (almost literally!- I was going to buy it, but noticed that the right cover was lifted and a tube was missing.? I was in the process of pulling the panel to see if it had been completely harvested, when the guy told the seller right behind me that he'd take the whole thing.? He just spoke before I thought to, and I didn't feel like arguing.)? ?He turned around the 1L10 and 1S2 on ebay for $199.99 about 3 weeks ago.? I got a nice 1L5, W, O and 1A6 from the same sale.? The former owner was a ham and experimented with TV, but his garage must have been regularly damp because much of the hardware has developed the white "fuzz".??
The type W is labeled as being "modified for station B".? It's not clear what that means; I initially thought that the B input had been routed to the A channel, but I don't see any evidence of that.? I have so many projects, it could be quite a while before I "get round tuit"

Got to draw the line somewhere. My long-suffering wife already points out that there is a fine
dividing line between collecting and restoring Tek gear and mental illness ;-)

Oh - almost forgot my "handbag" scope - a lightweight four channel 60MHz Tek 2004B. My only real foray
into digital storage oscilloscopes (other than the 7854 and 7912HB that is)

Depending on what you think of as the service life of the scope,

I'd like to have a good working scope, one working spare, and enough
parts units to be able to replace almost everything once.

Having said that, you may want to look into calibration equipment for
your scopes, if you want to start doing that yourself.

Those plugins will fit in a TM506 right next to the SC501.

Hi Harvey,

I¡¯m actually up to my ears with other projects and one of our members here in the US does terrific repairs and calibrations.
This is probably not very smart but I compared the measurement I get on the other scopes to the calibrated one and find them pretty close, certainly close enough for what I do.
I am set up for a number of repairs and calibration steps, so that's
not the problem. Up to my ears in a lot of projects, too. However,
as long as the scope is close enough for you, that's good enough. The
more scopes you have, the more you'll feel as if you need more
calibration stuff.

Re: How Many Scopes?

Lop pol, I was going to say at least no vacuum tubes except the CRT, but you said you want one (or two, or more).? Personally, I don't see why you would want a tube scope.? I mean, tubes are great for audio and guitar amplifiers, but why mess around with shack-heating fire bottles?? My preference is for 7000 and 5000 series solid-state scopes, although I do own an HP 54504A DSO because they were throwing it out at work.
Maybe if you used a tube scope back in the old days?? I used to have an HP 8566 spectrum analyzer, an 8350B sweeper, and 8494 and 8495 step attenuators back 25+ years ago at work, and now I have them all in my garage lab.? Had a Tek 2465B as well, but the knob and button lag drove me crazy, so I have no? intention of buying one now.? I sure would like a CSA803 again, but working on those digital beasts is such a pain.? Oh well.
