Re: Cure tracer with digital scope

Sorry it took so long to reply, Bert.. My curve tracer went wonky and it took days to figure it out. It turned out to be the Power Cord where it enters the cabinet. Intermittent operation but never OFF. I suppose one of either the GND or COMMON wires were open. FIXED.

501A B&K Curve tracer Settings
Vert Sensitivity 1mA/div
Step Selector 2uA/div
Sweep Volts 20 Volts

Agilent 54810 Settings
Math Setup
Source 1 CH 2
Source 2 CH 1

CH 1 5 V/div
CH 2 500 mV/ div
Horizontal 5 mSec/div

Banana Plug Connections:
CH 1 to B^K Vert
CH 2 to B&K Vert

I get a lot of loop back on the digital scope as well as on the Tek 475.
any suggestions?
I would attach a photo but I cannot find the attach button, I have done this before, has the photo attachment mechanism changed?

There may also be a difference in the transaction fees that eBay needs to pay, as in one may be a flat fee while the other may be a percent of transacted amount. It's been a long time since I looked into this, but I think that credit cards charge the recipient a percent of the transaction amount or a minimum transaction fee, so small transactions are relatively expensive, and there's a floor on how much less expensive larger transactions will get. By contrast I could believe that bank transactions may be a flat fee regardless of the transacted amount, which would give eBay more control over the fees they have to pay (by bundling many small transactions with the same account into one larger transaction).

I am, of course, speculating from a wealth of ignorance, and have no interest in playing the advocate for eBay's devil.

One thing to note is that credit cards may be easily disputed, thus not guaranteeing EBAY their money immediately.? Bank accounts may be harder to dispute and more difficult to correct.

Note: in the US, debit cards, while they are convenient in maintaining control over an account balance, do not have (or have not had) the legal protections that credit cards do.? May be the same with a bank withdraw.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this change applies to the US and may not be the same in in other countries, yes?

Here in the UK, the fine print appears to confirm that from 1 June 2021, you can still use PayPal to buy or sell goods privately. Also, if both parties use PayPal, the money gets paid into seller account immediately (in most cases). NB This is for private, low volume sellers. The seller then has to settle up with eBay in full each month. Links as follows:

120-0323 (2T:8T) and 108-0147 (2.2uH) are for the single-ended trigger circuit used in 547 S/N 6739 and down.

108-0215 (1.1uH) is in 544/546/547 all S/N.

Subject: [TekScopes] Free Tek toroids, coils and current transformers, plus a new B Trig 7904 assembly

This clean up is taking me to parts I have never seen before, batches we bought from service centers but never got around to looking through. There are a lot of 1-2-3 parts that are 108, 114 and 120 items.
I have no useful data on anything other than the 120 parts:

120-0323-01 (3) tiny axial ferrite, from RM/544, 546, 547
120-0366-00 (2) toroids, from 464, 465/R, 466
120-0468-00 (5) toroids, from 454/A/R
120-0603-00 (1) current sensor 2-parts-top and bottom, from 010--238-01/03. Is this for a probe? it looks like it, top and bottom jaws, but the RPR does not say where the assembly winds up.

plus there's:
108-0147-00 (2) axial inductors
108-0215-00 (20 axial inductors
108-0526-00 (3) small wound ferrite bead
108-0529-00 (5) tiny toroid inductors
108-0551-00 (2) toroid inductors
114-0105-00 (2) adj. coil
114--051 and 053 (3 of each) adj. coil, box says CA plug in peaking coils.
I'm guessing if you have one of these that's broken, a spare would be handy.
you can have any you want, just pay for shipping, most can go in a a padded bag very cheaply.

there's also a complete 050-0730-06, a Tek 7904 B-Trigger upgrade kit, plus I have the pdf instructions for it.
this is very extensive, new PCBs, cables, connectors, still factory sealed. all can be yours for $25 + shipping.
best to discuss these items off list to keep the clutter down.

we are shooting all the mechanical parts now, and will post them up to the stuff page when done (will take 3 days), there's curve tracer test panels, fan rotors, latches, locks, feet, RF shielding and bumpers, and a whole host of weird and wonderful Tek bits you may have a use for. Even those shallow crennelated BNC mounting nuts are in that batch. I know somebody wanted one a while back.

Challenging 2465 PS repair

Hi all,

I bought a For Parts or Repair 2465 PS on eBay.
My idea was (and still is!) to make it work again so I would have a spare for one of my 246x scopes.

It had parts missing, but in general it looked OK.

So I added the missing parts, hooked it up to my dummy load and powered it up......

Wrong idea, now it seems :-)

Some people see Magic Smoke?? Not me, I saw actual flames!!!

I still want this to be repaired, but I do acknowledge it might take some time :-)

Here some pictures: /g/TekScopes/album?id=263466

To be continued,

Leo

Thanks you guys. That's more to go on.

I'm looking at the additional connections to the card edge connector to see if I can figure it out. Also the shielded connections going to the top. I've never seen these used before but then again I haven't seen everything.

Re: OT! OT! --- E-bay fee change -- OT! OT! Cross posted with HP group.

Martin,

Unless it happens to you it's difficult to believe.

When you agree to use PayPal (or whichever latest flavor is currently popular) you rather explicitly allow them to reach into your bank account and take money out without notice.

When we rented out our vacation condo we were required by PayPal to provide our rental agreement which allowed us to withhold deposits from our renters. We had a renter violate our agreement: overloaded the condo with guests exceeding its capacity, caused damage. This was only time we were compelled to withhold the deposit because the cost of damages exceeded the rental deposit.

The renter fought furiously against us (the BBB is BS by the way) despite everything being very obvious and clear. (Seen the movie "Pacific Heights"?). Finally the renter had their credit card company reverse the charges on the rental deposit.

We discovered this a couple of months after the fact when $250 disappeared from our checking account. That was the ONLY indication we got that the charge reversal happened.

Despite our rental agreement in PayPals hands, PayPals documented charge reversal policies, and their very friendly and responsive customer service representatives, they never did a thing to challenge the charge reversal. To them it is vastly better to piss us off than the credit card company. The credit card company will always win and doesn't give a rats ass about you.

When you use these services (in the US) you will always be required to "let them win". Your recourse is the courts, in which case you loose. Good luck if you're talking over $5,000. Your legal fees will blow that out of the water.

I would also highly advise not linking your free credit union checking account to any other bank account. But that won't really protect you either. They'll just file the bill with a collection agency. Then the fun will really start.

I like to say, I'm not cynical, I'm "woke".

Sorry for the rant, but if you're going to sell on eBay, or deal with PayPal, or Venmo, you should be aware of what you're signing into.
Dave

Thats the "thingy" I'm talking about, yes. You say it allows them to "suck money out of my account". What I do not understand is that they are already able to do that via my credit card. Buyers usually pay me via bank transfer, and Ebay charges the credit card with the fees. So they already can do it, why to they need to do that "linking" business??

I've never subscribed to Paypal, but to what I heard is that once the money is on your account it cannot be taken back. But as long as its on a sort of intermediate "Paypal-account", thats a different story.

Ah, yes, and Sage Millimeter just changed its name to Eravant. Another engineer here at Raytheon told me Sage was infamous for poor delivery.
Not surprised to hear they changed their name. Beware!

Sorry to take it further OT, but I don't want anyone here to get fooled.

<Sure... but how does this account thingy increases their revenue?>

Are you talking about the switch from PayPal being the escrow agent to
Ebay doing that themselves or are you talking about the fact that E-bay now
wants to link to your bank account?

The answer to the first should be obvious, Ebay, not PayPal, will now
have the use of the funds while they are in escrow and will also get the
fees collected. Cha-Ching!

The second; while Ebay being linked to everyone's bank accounts may not
directly produce revenue for them, it will eliminate any possible loss to
Ebay in the event of non-paying bidders or items being returned or claimed
as damages in shipping, or not delivered or not as described, etc. Ebay is
going to suck the money out of someone else's account with or without their
knowledge or consent, just like PayPal did.

Nothing here is really new except that Ebay has stepped into the shoes
that PayPal used to occupy. Effectively, they changed the name, but the
game is the same.

Ebay made billions when it sold off PayPal. I'm just wondering how long
before E-bay places their NEW payment service into a separate part of the
company and then sells off that division. Is there anyone here that doesn't
understand the idom of "Rinse and Repeat!"?

This reminds me of the scene of Burt Reynolds movie .The Longest Yard'.
In it the Prison convicts are playing football against the Prison guards
and things are getting rough and one guard is particulary agreesive and
always charges trhough defensive line and *smashes* the quarterbark. Burt's
character comes up with a plan, the defensive line directly in front of the
guard opens up and lets him have an open field to the quarterback (Burt's
character). But Burt is ready for him and throws the ball at him HARD and
it smacks him directly in the nuts! Both sides reform their line while the
guard wonders around in a painfilled haze. Burt then says to his team
'Hey, it worked the first time so let's do it again!". They all laugh and
of course, they make the exact same play and the guard gets it where it
hurts the most all over again. After that he's *out* of the game!

I kind of feel that we the Ebay sellers (and consumers in general) are
getting the same abusive treatment (right in our financial nuts!) over and
over from Ebay and other greedy companies. Cable companies and ISPs are
among the worst! They charge you for high price services but then don't
deliver the promised performnce, then when everyone gets fed up with them
and their business declines, they change their name, advertise heavily to
regain custimers and do it all over again. Bright House/ Spectrum, are you
listening?

Sure... but how does this account thingy increases their revenue?

What a difference does it make compared to the process in place today
(using my credit card)? I'm just talking about the transits between Ebay
and my account, not the rest which of course is greed...

Re: New to Tek 465B operation

As you learned, some scopes have 1x/10x indicator lights on the dial.
ex. 465M does not. 465M you just have to remember (no direction is better than misdirection.)
ex. 465B it is selected by the contact pin on the probe and ring around the BNC.

If you are using a probe without the contact pin on a 465B, the dial will mislead by having the 1x lit on the dial regardless of the probe 1x/10x switch. You can force the 10x indicator by emulating the ring/pin by switching in <10K ohms to ground (1x is >10K to ground) in the indicator circuit. I did this for my 465B's channels (switch mounted on back - blasphemy, I know) with positions "Normal" and "Force 10x Indicator"). I just have to set things up once when connecting the non-pinned probe rather than remembering to ignore the INCORRECT indicator for each reading. That misdirection bit me a few times before I did this.

Something to consider if the misdirection bites you too and you are looking for something to do.

ps. there are other resistance values for 100x and 1000x but not useful for 465B dial indicator.

Re: New to Tek 465B operation

Thanks everyone for the great advice! I¡¯m looking into that probe now...

I found a complete service manual, it says for serials below 30,000. I have a newer 465B with SN:B045757, is there much difference in the manuals? I¡¯d guess the procedures are the same and the schematics are different? (Should I find and print a new one, or just reprint the schematics). I was looking for particular sections discussed on other forums and became lost. There are many out there. The 465 and 465B are similar, and the 465B has 2 or more revisions. If I had a newer eye prescription I would have seen that before printing, LOL!

Probes: I have pair of cheap Chinese 1-10X probes and the set that came with my Rigol. Is the auto-set on the probes important to doing the calibration? It calls for 10X probes. The manual is pretty specific with other items; cable length, impedance, T connectors, BNC terminators etc... I have a Chinese DDS sig gen/counter that supposedly is good to 60mHz. What must have equipment needed to do things properly?

So as not to mix up this thread too badly, after I go through the checks in the correct manual I¡¯ll start another. At the moment I¡¯d like to just get this unit fully functional.

Again, I¡¯m new to all of this and really appreciate everyone¡¯s help. This is a great group!

Re: OT: Stabilizing Old Transformer Input Wires

You can consider a 2 part potting compound. A while back, I bought some Dow Corning Sylgard 160, which comes in dual tube 400 ml units. It is intended to be dispensed with a special "caulking gun" type tool with a mixing nozzle. It was originally intended for a solar panel project which never happened because I found some manufactured panels at a good price. I, now, use the Sylgard for general potting, etc. Instead of dispensing the entire 400 ml at once, I just dispense whatever small amount I want into a small container and mix it manually. It cures, at room temperature, in about a day - faster in the oven. Beware; Its very strong and sticky. I made an initial mistake of using a glass 50 ml beaker and allowed it to set up before cleaning the beaker. I don't know if I will ever get the cured material out without breaking the beaker. I'm very careful to clean the tube ends and cap completely before putting the cap back on after I'm through.
