The last three plots on the page at are
from my 2430A, for instance.
If you set your 2440A to talk/listen mode at address 4, you should be
able to use the built-in F2 keyboard shortcut to request plots from it
without any further configuration hassles.
Of course, "free" means you get to deal with my personal (lack of)
user interface conventions. :) There are also some reasonably priced
options like for those whose time is worth
more.
Hardware-wise, you can use either a National Instruments board or
Prologix adapter, either of which can be had in the $200 or less
category. GPIB gives you a lot of bang for the buck, especially if
you can amortize the investment across several instruments.

A buddy of mine and I were discussing this not that long ago.
Another option, if you're a Unix/Linux kinda guy, is the Linux-GPIB
software at:

Hardware-wise, there's a bunch of options:
USB to GPIB:

Ethernet to GPIB:

Or if you want a drop-in card, there's a bunch out there, but expect to
pay more (new) than the two other options above.

I advice AGAINST the prologix adapters. Their I/O model is garbage..
effectively negating the intent of asynchronous use and making it
polling. DNU
I would recommend a used NI GPIB-PCI board off eBay to use it the right
way, IMO.
