The "banana plug" is actually a mating pin.
If you look inside one of your TM50x mainframes, you will see a circular fitting just behind and to the left of the slot guide. The circular fitting mates with the "banana plug" you are asking about and aligns the plug-in's rear connector with the connector in the mainframe so that they mate properly.
Removing it permanently may cause difficulty when inserting the plug-in. I don't know, as I have never tried that.
