It is, apparently, the former. I know my eyesight is getting bad,
but that was ridiculous. I see it and it does turn off the message.
The vertical and horizontal mode lights do all light up during the
boot process (well, the LEFT vertical mode lamp is out, but I think
I might have a spare), and then return to normal after the self-test
message is displayed.
