Re: pinout for mosfet to-3

Jerry,

This drawing would be clear to anyone who ever had to read a mechanical drawing or to anyone who had a mechanical drawing class in school.

?

There are several clues in the way the drawings are shown which follow standard mechanical drawing conventions. Your local library will have introductory books on mechanical drawing that can show you more of the conventions. Knowing how to read a mechanical drawing is something that is almost essential for anyone working in electronics.

¡¤???????? Solid lines in a mechanical drawing are used to show the shape and dimension of things that are directly visible.

¡¤???????? Dotted lines are used to indicate the shape, dimension, and (on occasion, the depth) of something that is not visible.

¡¤???????? There will always be three mechanical drawings, each from a different orthogonal axis, unless because of symmetry or because the shape is simple, only two are necessary, as in this case.

¡¤???????? When there are three drawings they will be aligned with each other, and at right angles. These three orthogonal (right angle) drawings provide an unambiguous description of the object¡¯s shape and dimension.

¡¤???????? When combined with the dotted lines, portions of the object that are not visible can be unambiguously determined. ?

¡¤???????? Finally, it is a convention to show the bottom view of the pin outs unless it is stated otherwise.

Hi,

The drawing is ambiguous for anyone who in in doubt about the meaning of the dashed lines. That the drawing was a bottom drawing was my conclusion also. I have another vendors footprint that is reversed and does not have the dotted line. It is the top view I am sure. Some vendors show the angle drawing that is unambiduous. I am planning a device that will use a test socket that will handle Bipolar and Mosfet devices. I would rather not make it wrong. My poor old head is easily confused.

Hi , the drawing is not ambiguous , the two round dashed lines (the round dome over the case) mean that are not directly visible, so the view is from bottom .

That is the one I found as well. The problem with it is that the
diagram showing the pinout on the last page is ambiguous about it
being the top or bottom view. As far as I know, they are always the
bottom view.

Some data sheets use an isometric drawing or label top and bottom to
resolve the ambiguity.
