Re: Tek Probes

Stefan Trethan

The P5100 sure has great specifications.
However I do not use it because the 5mm probe accessories do not fit
and most of the time ease of use will prevail if the measurement
allows.

I might have to try and match a pair up for the Lecroy DA1855A, since
they have DC gain adjustment.

If you ask me that probe, along with the P6015A, and A6302 based
designs may be most of what's left of Tek that I care for, in terms of
current production.

All our rubberized tek probes (P3010 or something) are by now broken
and only good to salvage the indicator pin assembly from.

Tek passive probes do not have serial numbers. They do have a date code, but this is not visible outside of the probe. It is usually written inside the comp box. I don't know what scheme Tek uses now, but when this probe was designed (1995), it was not easy to convert to a real date (not a 2 digit year followed by a two digit week as used in the past)
I was the engineering project manager for this probe. It was designed to replace the P6009, which had many machined parts in the comp box making it expensive to produce. The P6009 was in production close to 35 years, and I suspect the P5100 will as well, if Danaher does not axe it due to not meeting a minimum xx million $ annual revenue target. The users I have talked to seem to love it.
