You want to only switch on once at the zero crossing to minimise in rush.
Thyristors handle hundreds or thousands of amps relatively cheaply.

I did, after all, use a 564 and a 7403 to make the measurements :)
Some of us are actually interested in the applications of Tek scopes too. When you're a moderator you can tell me what I can post or not.
Your presumption as to what I do or do not understand about dimmers and zero-crossing is also supercilious.
