Hi Barry you said "someone cut off the small diameter tube that extends past the larger diameter portion. "
There are two version of the heater - PN A1029 is the early version where the porcelain contacts the rubber of the reservoir directly. The later version PN A1234 has a small diameter steel tube extending from the porcelain..
If this is what you were referring to, then perhaps you have the early version and no one cut the tube off.
If you are referring to the end where the tip goes, and they cut off that tube.............well, thats a shame.

Hi Greg,
I'm looking at a PDF parts manual for a 470 that's dated Apr,'96. On PDF page 20, Item No. 3 has a Part No. of B1030 and Part Name of "Filter Retainer".
Unfortunately, just today I realized that the element in my 802 has been modified. Someone cut off the small diameter tube that extends past the larger diameter portion. I'm looking at replacing that element with one from an 809 which is supposed to be somewhat compatible with a slightly larger diameter element body so I'll be needing a new Element Cover and Nut to go along with it.
Maybe one day I'll get this going...
Thanks,

Barry,
Is your unit a true 470? I see no part
number B1030 in the manual parts list.
There is a part number A1030 (more about this
at the end of this message) that
is readily available from Amazon and
others. That is unless they went through
a design change and there are multiple manual
revisions reflecting other parts
that were used. You aren?€?t talking about
the plastic cap at the end of the
filter tube nearest the tip end, are you? Hakko only listed that part as
coming with the filter pipe kit (part number
B1017 describes as ?€?filter pipe
w/front holder and filters) which is pure
unobtanium. Otherwise it looks like
the spring filter (part number A 1030)
provides holding force between the front
cap and the small filters.
