Okay, I've done a little research on the Tek color shutter system, and it seems to involve not 3 colors, but actually 4 colors: Red, Green, Blue, and White. So the white regions are NOT being displayed by combining R, G, and B phases, but just the last W phase. Each color phase is a different angle of polarization. I don't know if that helps diagnose the failure very much, and I don't see how it explains why the image appeared magenta when you disconnected the shutter.
The more I learn about this the less I feel like I understand.
