good point, thanks for the reminder!
The DIP canned crystal oscillators must have more current source capability than standard TTL. I ran the output through a 1K resistor and a 5K trimpot to the anode and it works well, as seen.

The TD I'm using is labeled (if my eyes are good enough) "TD713" which is a 1 ma Ip, and I recall checking it at approximately that current.
So I would need, as you suggest, to connect the anode to +5V through the trimpot., and pull down with the TTL output. Probably add a pullup resistor to help with the other edge.

I want to keep this as simple as possible, for ease of construction and to eliminate sources of jitter... right now it's just the oscillator, two resistors, a trimmer and a tunnel diode. Can't beat that for simplicity!
Adding one package for the pretrigger delay is acceptable ;)
