Hi Snap,
I don't know that it is a gloat thing.
I have somewhere around a hundred of my transformers in
the hands of members of this group. I have wound a whole
lot more when you consider all of the attempts and prototypes.
I stopped winding about 7 years ago to design and build
my latest and greatest winding machine. I did it because
I was bone tired of the process my previous design required...
It was way too stressful.
The fundamental difference between my transformers, and
Bill's, is that I used the same universal wind that tek
used originally, and that made it easy to fit the filament
windings on the transformer. Bill used a layer wind on
a spool, with #32 wire instead of the #38 wire that was
originally used. This resulted in a transformer that
was too large to safely fit the filament windings, so
he recommended replacing the 5642's with SS diodes.
How you got the filament windings in there is a mystery
to me. I would have expected arcing to the ferrite core.
Bill sold his machine to one of the members of the group
when he got tired of winding by hand. He retired shortly
before I needed a transformer for my 547, which is why I
began my winding project. I never intended to wind more
than I needed for myself, but the guys over on Tekscopes2
cajoled me into winding a whole lot more.

I don't want to gloat or anything, but I had my 547 transformer rewound by Bill almost 20 years ago IIRC. It's been flawless, I even put back the 5642 rectifier tubes so it works at load.
