The most successful ones (IMHO) are the ones that have a hollow element and
suck solder through that into a chamber.? Of those types, you either get the
ones with an integral pump or ones that use shop air.

I have an ungar that works a little.

I have a Hakko (two of them), that work reasonably well.

I have a metcal handpiece that does need shop air and works best.

It's possible to pull out the through hole
plating with sufficient skill and force.

Practice, practice, practice :-)

I had an Ungar, but replacement parts were getting hard to find. I seriously
toyed with the idea of getting a cheap station and fitting it with a solenoid
valve and vacuum reservoir so the vacuum was instantly available. But then
I ended up with a Metcal and lost interest in that.

Personally, I never liked the guns with the pump in the handle; it's easier
to maneuver the smaller hand pieces into tight places, but that's just a
personal preference. A lot of people swear by Hakko and you can find Chinese
knockoffs for cheap.

Good tools make a big difference (and for this kind of work you need
good tools). It was a splurge when I upgraded to Metcal but I've never
regretted spending the money.
