Thank you for describing your useful warnings (diatribes).
About the variac becoming a step-up transformer at the end of its range, this may not be necessary for us who have decent line voltage, and it should be easy to unsolder the supply line that connects partially inside the winding and connect it instead to the end of the winding.
About making a widow out of one's wife, this only applies to the married ones, no? I am already divorced. You see the widow-making somehow related to the fuse, or is it the same as any other suicide cord without fuse?
