Download and read the service manual before you do anything.
You didn't say what you paid for it, but if it wasn't expensive, it's probably broke.
A DVM on the output probably won't hurt it if you connect the ground side first,
but don't go probing it with an analog VOM.
There's a tunnel diode right across the pulse output that is very easy to break.
I don't recall whether this unit adjusts TD bias for load resistance, but it may not work
without a 50 ohm load attached.

Unless you have other stuff with 50 ohm GR-874 connectors, just buy GR to BNC adapters and be done with it.
They're insanely expensive new, but cheap at hamfests.
Read the fine print. There are 125 ohm versions that you don't want.

Did I mention that the TD is extremely delicate. It can't withstand ANY voltage on the
output. If you think a series capacitor will protect it, think again.
