Why do you think it is metal? Is it shiny in a way
that doesn't show in the pictures?

If it is the black stuff, looks like epoxy.
If it is the white stuff, looks like silicone heat
sink compound.

I am thinking it must have been stable in vacuum with some warm temperatures when the
etcher was running...
