Hi Kevin,
I will take my display apart (again) when I've ordered the replacement and take some more pictures.
But in short:
It has a normal LCD in front, with a light-dispersing piece of plastic behind it.
There is only one small 3.5 - 4 inch CCFL tube on the right hand side of the display, powered by the inverter board on the left side of the scope behind the keyboard.
About the battery: that's just what I did:
4x 3000mAh NiMh C-cells as a drop-in replacement of the original battery.
I did ordered them with tabs, and I soldered the tabs together, to avoid bad contacts in the future.
I re-used the circular positive contact from the old battery.
Since I do not have the external charger my thoughts were the same: just let the trickle charger do it's job.
To be continued,
Leo
