One more experiment needs to be performed. If it is just heat, then
preheating the transformer with a hair dryer to 130F or so (allowing
enough time for the heat to reach the core) should make the unit
fail to start or quit in a very short time.

Heat is the problem, coupled with a deteriorating HV transformer.
Since new, or even re-wound transformers are not available I
performed a bit of an experiment with a less eloquent solution but
obtained very promising results:
