Hello,
I have a 2246 which I have been using for 4-5 years,
maybe once a week or so.
Recently I went to use it, turned it on and it was
clicking. I now know this is called "chirp mode".
I did some simple google searching and it sounded like
the capacitors on the power supply board were the
usual culprit so I took the thing apart and got the power
supply out. I ordered some capacitors to replace all
the silver-colored ones. I made a mistake and assumed
these were axial because of that lead coming off the top.
The capacitors came in and I started replacing, to
discover that the top lead was a 2nd ground. :-(
I made my axials work as best I could, then found that
I had miscounted the 1000uFs and had to order some
more. The next batch were radials and fit better.
I did not change the smaller electrolytics (100 uF) or the
really big one (C2202).
Eventually I got it all put back together but there is
no improvement.
It does not chirp if I power it up with the main
board removed. If the main board is attached
I get a steady chirping and a little LED on the main
board blinks on and off in time with the chirping.
I found the manual on-line (should have started there!)
and have done some measurements on the PS board. My
+44 says -34 (!) That's not right. The other voltages
on the J1204 seem ok (with the main board removed)
I did attempted to do some searching on this group, but,
frankly I was not able to use the yahoo groups search
mode to accomplish much. I suspect my story has been
replayed many times here.
I humbly request a pointer to my next step.
Chris Howard
