One wonders why they didn't just bump the part number. Surely they weren't running out of integers in the 1960s.
=====================

The company I worked for in the mid 80's used an old Honeywell computer for accounts - and because we were a consultancy company, we used to bill our customers monthly for time spent (plus parts purchase and expenses). Problem was the machine was so ancient it used octal internally, and once its transaction counter hit the buffers (it ran out of integers!), lo and behold we ground massively to a halt. Since we absolutely could not invoice our customers we might well have gone into cash flow meltdown.

I cannot remember how it was worked around, but I well remember the panic in the accounts function!
