DXF file for a panel layout?
4
Does anyone have a DXF file layout of their panel design? I am messing around with panel design and wondered if anyone have a cad layout of theirs? I have made some panel layouts in Illustrator but have not started with any cad stuff... As usual, thank you! Andy

Autopilot?

Bob, Is that an autopilot I see in the panel picture? What was involved with its installation? Are you happy with it or would you do something different? After 8 years and over 1000 hrs time to finish up the control stick :)
41
When I built my Tailwind, I configured the passenger side stick to be removable. I simply just welded it up like the pilot side and cut it off planning on finding a short aluminum rod to fit tightly inside the tube and then fasten with an AN3 bolts drilled through the tube and rod to hold it together. The only problem was that I never needed it and never got around to it. If I wanted to let someone fly I from the pax side they could just hold the stick itself. But I figured after 8 years and over 1000 hours it was time to finish it up. A problem was that I could not find a aluminum rod or 4130 tube that would fit inside my yoke without a lot of slop. It needed to be about 0.66 OD. Another problem was that I did not have a metal lathe to turn down an aluminum rod to fit. Soo attached is a picture of what I did. I figured that there is very little pressure on the yoke and that a hardwood dowel would work just fine. Well I had the same problem of no lathe so I rigged up my drill press with a "dead center" on the bottom of the drill press and made a piece that I could chuck in the drill at the top and attach to the end of the dowel. Only had to take off about 0.08 so just spun it up and used an old 1" sanding belt to finish it. Drilled the hole and that is what you see. My bolts are at the hangar so I will take it down when it warms up and get an AN3 bolt and put it in the hole you see and then match drill another hole on the stub sticking out of the control stick with this unit inserted and I should be good. Kind of looks like a "duck head" doesn't it. :) Hope everyone stays warm. I am excited to hear on the forum about all the new activity with new Tailwinds being purchased. Keith

insurance
22
I'm in the process of buying the Schultz tailwind that has been on Barnstormers. I just got a quote for the insurance. Aside from it costing a lot more than I expected, they are requiring a one hour checkout in make and model. Has anyone else encountered this issue before? The airplane is being sold by the son of the now deceased builder, but the son, although a pilot, has no taildragger experience and I don't believe he is an instructor. I am an instructor and I have probably 6 or 7000 hours of tailwheel time. I just don't have any in a tailwind. Do many people just self insure these days? It seems that USAIG is not making it easy for us who fly little airplanes. Brian Bird

Wing alignment
11
Now , I am totally confused. I have all this conflicting data about the wing fitting alignment. Even forgetting the drawings(I¡¯m using Aircraft Spruce), if I locate the trailing edge for clearance of the torque tube, the forward attachment is too high in the root rib. This is assuming that I am actually trying to get a 0 degree incidence. I am also assuming that I have to have the forward attachment thru the center of the carry through. Help! Thank you.

Rudder cables and Fairleads etc..
8
Hello all, did some searches and really did not find much, so apologies if it's been asked.. How do I go about the length of the rudder cables? What kind of cables, type, size, etc. Did you make up your own cables or have Spruce make custom ones? Also about the fairleads, Spruce has two kinds; one is a large hole guide, the other one has a small hole where the cable runs through. Does it matter? Do they need to be just snap in on both sides or the ones that spruce sells with a retaining metal clip? Again, did more searches and cannot find much. I believe the welded tubes that they go on are 3/4 x 3/4 and I have 3 per side. As usual, any help highly appreciated! Andy ps. quick build update; been doing lots of painting.. most of the fuselage, pedals and controls, rods, turnbuckles, etc etc etc have all been painted.. everything went from scratched up black to gray! Finally at the point where I can start installing stuff! Progress!!

Trip Map idea.
14
Hi Everyone, My friend Rick with whom I take EPIC Adventures, took a large USA aviation map and put a flag on each of the airports that he stopped at over the last 30+ years flying his RV4. I thought it was a really great idea and I did the same thing which is attached to this email. You will probably have to "blow it up" some to see all the pins but I used red stick pins instead of flags. These pins represent all the airports that I have landed at in an airplane that I was controlling. It was a fun project and I would encourage all of you to do something similar. It brought back many memories of flying many different types of airplanes into many different types of airports. Some of the airports were not airports at all but farm fields and some pretty sketchy. Also, Rick and I are putting together preliminary ideas for our EPIC Adventures for 2025. We were going to do a day trip to the northernmost airport that straddles the US and Canadian border (48Y- Piney Creek) but it was closed a month or so ago. We will have to find another one. Other than that we are thinking about a trip to the far eastern tip of Maine as a possibility and also one to the Pacific Northwest. We think we will have to pick the proper time of year for the Pacific NW trip to get the best chance of good weather without low ceilings. We will also perhaps plan on going out to Longmont CO (KLMO) where Ricks daughter lives plus Rick has a hangar there. We can base out of LMO order to do some day trips or overnight trips into some of the mountain strips and have my brother fly down from MT in his recently restored Decathlon and make it a "threesome". Anyway, hope everyone is having a great 2025 so far. Weather here in Wisconsin has been too cold and windy to do much flying but hopefully that will change. I have my hotel reservations at Watertown already and will soon start putting together the Airventure presentation. Keith

Calbie Wood Metal Wings
18
Are Calbie Wood metal wings generally heavier than standard W10 wings? I know, I know, somebody is going to say at what span? Well I¡¯m pretty sure the Calbie Wood plans are for wings of only one length. I guess Wittman wings have been made in several slightly different spans. Anyway, please shoot me a comparison, if you will. Thanks. Tony

Flap setting for take off
13
I am nearing completion of a rebuild of a W8 with an O 200 engine. I shall be performing the first post rebuild flight from a 500 yrd strip and so would like to set the flaps to the very best short field angle. I¡¯m guessing about 15 degrees but can anyone give me guidance? Regards, Ray On 20 Jan 2025, at 23:45, Mike Wilson via groups.io <mike_tailwind@...> wrote: ? Also, cant the bow forward so that the bottom edge of the windshield can be cut square. This makes fitting the windshield easier and simplifies the fairing at the bottom edge of the windshield (no compound curves). On Monday, January 20, 2025 at 04:16:43 PM CST, Keith Klos via groups.io <kloskeith@...> wrote: Terry, I raised the front windshield bow about 1 1/4 inches but would raise it higher if I were to do it again. I say this for 2 reasons, first as I look at other Tailwinds, their transition from cowl to windshield angle is less abrupt than mine and I think mine carries a speed penalty. The second reason is that I ran all my cables and wires through the firewall underneath that bow and I would have liked a little more space. As it was it was pretty tight to get everything through there and have it fire protected with some steel sleeves and flexible fire sleeves. I would probably go 2 inches. It would have been easy to do as there was plenty of cowl material that I had to trim off anyway. As to material I would go with 3/16 plexi. I originally used 1/8 inch Lexan polycarbonate for the main windshield and the side windows. I still have the 1/8 inch Lexan on the sides (doors and rear windows also) but I went to 3/16 plexi for the windshield. Yes I think the 1/8 polycarbonate is stronger and more flexible but on my airplane it vibrated really bad due to the prop pulses. If I put my finger on the windscreen during flight it would actually vibrate so hard it would hurt my finger and I think contributed a lot of noise also. I first tried to put some supports in-between the window and the frame angles but finally decided to change it out with very good results. It easily conforms to the slight curvature. I simply pulled the old window out, laid it on the floor and marked the new piece including the holes. Relatively easy. I did; however, make a mistake that I would correct if I do it again. I thought it would be nice to have a tinted windshield so went with a grey tint on the replacement window. Works just fine during the day but at night it is like driving at night with your sunglasses on. It is exaggerated by the fact that I have a relatively weak landing light. I have landed at night and it works fine on large well lighted runways but on some of the narrow less well lit runways it is a little dicey. Good Luck Keith

Light sport!!!
14
Please forgive my ignorance, this hasn't been a concern of mine nor would it be currently. However as I age, I'm becoming more aware of deteriorating health that I might start to face!!! Currently I'm a class 3 med holder but if my health does make it more difficult to keep this, I'd like to still fly my tailwind, under the light sport medical approval. With this said, I have not had my tailwind faa inspected, only started registration. If possible, how should I register my tailwind to allow me to legally fly my plane under light sport? Does this even matter? Is this even possible? Does anyone fly their tailwind using the light sport med? Thanks

Windshield

Hello to the group. 2 questions today. I see some of the W10s windshield forward base looks to be raised by maybe 1.5 inches. My drawings don¡¯t show it. Wondering about the benefit and how it affects cowl fit. 2nd question is, what is the preferred glass thickness. My plans say 1/8 min. That seems thin by my experience on other home builds. 3/16 seems more reasonable, but I don¡¯t know about the ability to conform to the proper shape. Thanks to all.
