Wing alignment
Now , I am totally confused. I have all this conflicting data about the wing fitting alignment. Even forgetting the drawings(I¡¯m using Aircraft Spruce), if I locate the trailing edge for clearance of the torque tube, the forward attachment is too high in the root rib. This is assuming that I am actually trying to get a 0 degree incidence. I am also assuming that I have to have the forward attachment thru the center of the carry through. Help! Thank you.

It¡¯s the compendium of the information from the old forum. Compiled by a gentleman from Switzerland I believe. It is in the files section on Groups.io.? Very detailed info in there I read it myself and enjoyed reading most of it as orientation material for the Tailwind. No problem, it¡¯s the only thing I can offer in the way of knowledge since I have not build a plane yet.? On Thu, Jan 30, 2025 at 2:26?PM Terry Burch via <terry.burch2=[email protected]> wrote:

Read the messages from the last few days... This topic has been covered many times, and it and many many more conundrums are addressed in the compendium document.? There's a whole web site at where these little gems reside. Sent from my Pixel 5a On Thu, Jan 30, 2025, 2:31?PM Brady William Cope via <brady.w.cope=[email protected]> wrote:

The drawings for the front spar fitting are a mess. I provided dimension measured from the bottom of the spar before cutting the inboard tapers. The rear fitting centerline should be on the center of mass of the spar. The rear fitting is less critical If you only tack welded the fuselage carry thru. so it can be moved up or down. Have you installed wing skins yet???

Forget about zero incidence. Even Wittman made a mistake in believing he had zero incidence on any of the Tailwinds he built. I measured #1 in the Wittman Hangar at approximately .8 degrees. (8/10 of a degree) The other issue is where the fuselage reference is measured from. When the fuselage sides are tack welded in the flat, as the crossmembers and diagonals are welded, the bottom longeron below the doors is no longer exactly parallel with the fuselage horizontal reference lines. Anything up to 2 degrees incidence will be fine. !/8" clearance between the flap tube and the upper longeron is fine. Just make sure the incidence of the wings is exactly the same both sides. If the top skin is not installed the wings should be supported so there is no twist from rib #2 to the last full rib.

Some more details on angle of incidence. Incidence is defined as the angle between the chord line of the wing and the longitudinal axis of the airplane. Both the flat bottom wing and the current wing were modified airfoils and technically no definitive chord line exists. The W8 plans say to put? the bottom of the airfoil parallel to the longitudinal axis. Drawing an approximate chord line that puts the angle of incidence at decimal 8 degrees. However the bottom of the? wing on the prototype is 1/4" lower at the rear spar than at the front spar.so that crested additional incidence. An article on Wittman's number three stated that anything from 0 to 2 degrees is acceptable.? Door clearance on the flat bottom wind was not an issue. With the round bottom wing clearance is an issue.?
