Hi All,

On Monday, 3/10, the Waterford Library is hosting a talk on the two March eclipses. I am giving this talk, and it starts at 6p.m. Around the talk, I was hoping that we might get some TAAS members to bring their binoculars and/or telescopes to the library to show the Moon and some planets to the attendees. The library and I have been discussing times. I am leaning towards from 5:30 to 8:00pm. Would any of you be willing to be part of this event? If so, let me know soon. Would anyone want to bring and operate the Moon chair for this event?

Would someone send me the TAAS logo? I would like to get our logo placed on the flier for this event.

Holler if you have questions about this event. Thanks!
Leslie

Re: binocular and/or telescope volunteers

Great and thanks, George. If we start earlier, say 5;30pm or so, Venus and Mercury will be up. And Jupiter, Mars and Uranus will be up a good portion of the night, so lots of solar system goodies to show the attendees. I'll send out an update on final times for the event and when we can come over to get set up prior to the start of activities.

I'm free to setup and help that night.

Re: Help needed to remove primary and secondary from the CC observatory 20inch RC

No, please... windows are not optical glass and suede is way too abrasive.? So think how soft that is.... we don't use paper towels to rub optics. It's for blotting biological materials after letting them soak in water, rinsing repeat. It's not the same, sorry but thanks.

Re: Connecticut College optical set

Oops, silly me, this is a Ritchey-Chretien isn¡¯t it. Probably not suited to portable/visual astronomy. I do seem to remember looking thru an eyepiece years ago at Conn, and we run a 10¡± RC visually at Stellafane, but is it true that they¡¯re really considered photographic instruments? Maybe an EAA project?

Re: Connecticut College optical set

Jay:
I¡¯ve been riffing about the optics with Leslie, Mark and anyone else who would listen for a few months now. I thought if TAAS ever had an observatory, we¡¯d already have the optics for a nice scope. I do remember Lockwood¡¯s version and that was also one of the ideas I thought about too. I also thought if some deserving group or person stepped up and wanted the optical set, that would also be a potential path. My primary concern was to keep them from being stuck in a closet and forgotten about.

Jeremy does service all sorts of cars and pickups, especially this time of year when the roads are harsh on paints. He¡¯s a true gear head that loves what he does and will usually work with anyone. I suggest you send him a note off his web site and he¡¯ll let you know.?

This is so cool, Bob, and thank you and Jeremy for the kind offer! As George mentioned, optics (especially a set of this quality) are on another level. Does he do minivans?
Hope to meet you under a clear sky soon, Jay

I¡¯m curious about the future plans for these amazing optics. I remember Leslie¡¯s email string about finding them a home but I don¡¯t recall the outcome. Leslie, how do you and Alex envision what¡¯s next?
To the club members, this is a stretch but if the college is willing, could we take them on as a portable scope? Does anyone remember Mike Lockwood¡¯s version??

That¡¯s cool, George, totally understood. Let Jay know though, that Jeremy¡¯s garage can be thought of as a HUGE sink (floor drain) with a supply of running hot and cold water. The power washer could be used to simply supply a bucket with the garage offering protection from the elements. Up to him.
As for customer cars, he often cleans the cars from the local corvette club, seen at Ocean Beach every now and then. He has also done a Lambo, Ferrari, numerous Porsches, a Rolls and even helped prep the pain of a Lear Jet for subsequent coating. Like I said, he¡¯s a well know pro.

Firstly, thanks very much to you and your son for offering your assistance. I¡¯ll let Jay have the final say on this, but the cleaning of the optics is a delicate and precise procedure and Jay has extensive experience in doing this and I¡¯m not sure that the washer you described is the ideal cleaning approach. It¡¯s typically more of a dab and dissolve type of approach with specific cleansing agents.
As an aside, I¡¯ll bet some of the astro gear heads here would live to see those client cars!

Hi guys. I¡¯m new to the group and astronomy in general. Haven¡¯t had a chance to partake in any endeavors yet. Hope to soon. However, my son owns a car detailing shop in Old Saybrook, right on Rt. 1 as you come off 95 south. He has a garage that he washes cars in using a professional power washer (very adjustable) that is supplied with hot and cold water. The garage drains to a floor drain. He has agreed to help clean the mirror. He is a professional, quite adept at cleaning and caring for cars worth well over $100k. However, he has no problem just assisting if someone else feels more comfortable being in charge. His name is Jeremy Cimmino and his shop is Saybrook Auto Salon on the web and Facebook. His contact info can be found there. If interested, let me know or you can contact him directly.

That sounds fine to me. Thanks very much. If Leslie is OK with keeping the mirrors at Conn for a few weeks I can come up to help get them into your vehicle when you¡¯re ready. If there is no storage at Conn I¡¯ll keep them here until you¡¯re available.
