Sail Ring SIze

Another option is to simply lace the sail on with any heavy nylon cord. "Parachute" cord come to mind. Two long cords in a spiral wrap would do nicely. One for each spar. Works good on my 'fish. Dave J sd0044@... ========================================= ----- Original Message -----

I have not been able to find any locally so can anyone tell me the diameter of the real Sunfish boom? If my boom is the same size I could order replacements form the web. Thanks, Ed Yahoo! I'll try and get a boom measured for you in the next few days. In the mean time, if you want to go sailing you can use a couple of alternatives to the "Shower Curtain Rings". A down and dirty replacement is nylon zip-ties. They work great in an emergency and are a (pardon me) zip to install on the fly. The down side of zip-ties is that most are not made with a UV inhibitor in the plastic so they get brittle and break after being exposed to direct sun for a couple of months. The other substitute commonly used is low stretch line. The reason for low stretch is so you maintain an even sail edge. In the Sunfish Class FAQ page Bishop Stieffel notes: "I recommend using spec 12 for sail ties. Tie an over hand knot (the first half of a square knot ) through the grommet and around the boom. Place a pen or pencil between the line and the boom and finish the square knot - this helps you keep the sail tied at a consistent distance from the spar. Sometimes, I've had square knots come loose, so I make sure that I've cut my ties long enough to use each end of the tie's leftovers to tie a half hitch around the sail tie". As Bishop points out you want a little distance between the sail and the boom. This is so the sail can take the proper shape. Wayne -----Original Message----- |

Hello Ed,
I checked the Sunfish spars and they measure at 1 1/2" outside diameter. The sail ring measures about 1 5/8" inside diameter. Great, thanks for the measurements, Wayne, they match my "Fish-clone"

exactly. For now I am going to use tie-wraps until I order a set of rings. Just for fun.... How fast has a Sunfish actually gone? I would guess that there is a limit at which catastrophic boom/sail/mast failure could occur. I have never approached top speed as I have yet to sail with fewer than two aboard. The commonly used hull speed formula is: 1.34 X the square root of LWL = Speed (in knots) A boat's LWL (Length at Water Line) is equal to the distance between the wave crests created at the bow and stern by the boat's motion through the water. A boat rides in the trough between the two wave crests when it is at it's theoretical maximum hull speed. In reality this formula was developed for keel boats and many other factors including displacement, beam, and the shape of the bow and stern are also involved. Planing hulls, such as centerboard dinghies, are capable of exceeding their theoretical hull speed when they achieve a planing attitude. This is accomplished under wind conditions that are strong enough to propel the boat up it's own bow wave. The boat is lifted partially out of the water as it rides the crest. Theoretical hull speed for a Sunfish having a LWL of 13.9' = 5 kt (6 mph) LWL is probably a couple of inches shorter than the total boat length, but this makes little difference in the results of the equation. I don't know of a "fastest speed" figure. Maybe someone who races a lot knows of a recorded speed. I have heard of people using the latest marine GPS devices to clock speed, but so far nothing for a Sunfish. As for busting stuff, yes there is a limit. Factors include crew weight, wind velocity, equipment fatigue, and sailing technique. I have folded spars by sailing close-hauled when I should have fallen off the wind - both for efficiency and stress on the equipment. Then again I have all the ballast a Sunfish can take and a little bit more ...and something has to give - and it will. Just as a note of trivia - theoretically, eliminating all friction, something sail powered can achieve a speed triple that of the wind. Ice boats designed for speed trials come very close. The speed record for a sailboat - a trifoiler - is somewhere just over 50 mph in (I think) a 25 mph wind. Wayne -----Original Message----- |

Instead of using tie wraps which can tighten by accident use some thin line...
