Random Switch

1997 ej22 that Small Car did the conversion about 10 years ago based on the paperwork I got with the van.?
In the on position the switch lights up, and I notice no change in how the van runs with the switch on or off.?
Anyone know what it does?
The switch is located next to the ECU and is wired directly into the harnes.?
Thanks!

PJ

That might be the re-programming port. I would send this to small car and get a better answer.

That switch probably jumps the check mode wires. check your wiring diagrams or just monitor timing curve at both positions.

A coupla other options are that it interrupts the check engine light in the dash from coming on.?
Or…a handy fuel or ignition interrupt.?
But…as you can tell from the groups guesses, no one will know but the vendor. Give them a ring.?
And please let us know what you find out as this is the first time I’ve ever heard of smallcar introducing such a switch.?
Best
Brent
Ps: If smallcar doesn’t know you’ll have to break out a multimeter and start the process of measuring (using the resistance - audible tone mode) from the wires feeding the switch to each pin on your ecu. And remember to do so with the switch “on” and battery disconnected.?

How about used to switch in or out something like an EcuTune a/f map for the stock one? For our, now-deceased EG33, I added an EcuTune chip so that it would run happily on regular gas (fuel-enriched map did not meet emissions standards). In our case, running rich didn't cause inspection problems, so I never added the switch EcuTune recommended to easily swap maps.?

Google the number on the side of the EMU to figure out what year and model Subaru it came from. Then download the Subaru documentation for that year. For my '95, it was in the OBD II document. Look up the wire colors on the diagrams. My guess is the switch allows togging the EMU into manual or automatic transmission mode.

Do those wires connect to the ECU. If so, what pin numbers. Can unwrap the harness a bit to see where they go otherwise.

Do you have the two green test mode connectors? (also near the ECU on the harness) If not then maybe this switch is a substitute. They should be left unconnected for engine running otherwise there may be weird codes and driveability issues.

I like this approach.? ?There are devices to make it easy to trace down the wires.? I own and frequently use this quite?affordable wire tracker from harbor freight: ??

Thanks everyone.?

Reply from Austin at Small Car "We don’t put switches on the harness.? If that is in your harness—I recommend you get a new harness.? That is a terrible idea."
Even though the conversion components came from S.C., all the receipts?for the swap are from Dean's Car Care in Portland,OR.
So I will dig through the folder and see if I can find who did the harness.
I have the wiring diagram and have not had time to go through it yet and try to figure it out.?

I do have the green test plugs, I will plug them in and flip the switch and see what happens.

I like the idea of a TUNE, but sadly no?increase in HP when switch flipped in either direction.??

I also have a financier?wire tracer that I will use to find which direction the wires run.

I will report back, I should have time today to investigate.

You said it is a ’97 EJ22,? That is OBD2.? There should be an OBD2 connector,? not the green plugs.? Leads me to think someone wired it as OBD1 (not Small Car). Google the number on the ECU and see what it’s from.? Also, how many O2 sensors do you have?? OBD1 has one and OBD2 has two.? Someone might have gotten a deal on that harness and ECU.?

If it is ODB2 maybe that switch is to shut down the Bluetooth scanner so it doesn't drain the battery

I believe he means the 12v supplied to the OBD port which may have a Bluetooth unit plugged into it for diagnostics.?

I second Brent's call. It's for the always on CEL. I just cut the wire and used my code reader or later my TorquePro.

OK guys, who cuts wires without knowing what is going on. As my first post, check the wiring diagram... Apparently that may not be available to all, so I attached a '97 Impreza ECU diagram. Andrew had very good point that got me back here. The '97 has both OBD11 and old school connectors. The harness has been compromised so if wire color doesn't work than pinout connectors to verify continuity. ECM part number verification is a good call.?

Ok, spending a few minutes, The check engine light switch would make perfect sense. California smog requires an operable and illuminated check engine light with various transmission and vehicle speed codes as allowed by Executive Order. Turning off the light would be a convivence feature, Identify this diagram with red/white wire going to pin 8 of connector B74 and pin 58 of ECM. This wire will be grounded for operation of bulb. Why the wire color change? switch should only open 1 circuit(there is probably a splice back to the same red/white wire). Also included 97 terminal Id charts.

I responded using my phone and am not seeing what I wrote on the web site.

The red wire is terminal 58 "malfunction Indicator Lamp"
The yellow wire is grounded best as I can tell from my wire tracer. Even with the plug disconected from ECU there was no tone from the tracer.?
The illuminated switch acts like a check engine light. And yes, it is always on as I do not have a "code killer".

I am going to leave the switch as is.?

Thank you all.?
