Re: gas tank emissions monitor isn't setting

Gary,

Which exact plate are they trying to get? There are numerous different plates in Nevada for older vehicles (classic vehicle, classic rod, old timer, etc) and they all have slightly different rules.?

I’m familiar with classic vehicle and classic rod registration here in NV. For both of those you will not need to smog unless the registration has been red-tagged by the emissions lab. You just need to not have a failed smog within 90 days of registering the vehicle and hold classic vehicle insurance.?

If you’ve already run by the emissions lab and have been red tagged, then you will need to address the problem.?

I assume you’re talking about an obd2 code, right?
And that code causes the OBD2 MIL error to be thrown and the light stays lit.

Im pretty certain that none of the folks that I’ve spoken with tell the smog test station that their engine is anything but stock. ?That means that the smog referee does not pay attention to any mil lights and does not plug into your OBD2 port because, as far as they know, the engine is a 1986 which did not have obd capabilities.

The smog testing in Oregon entails the referee sticking a sniffer wand up the vanagon tailpipe and analyzing the readings to ensure that the vehicle is burning at least as clean as the standards set for an 86 vw engine.

Am I close to answering your question??

Brent

This is for Nevada - it needs to pass smog because they're trying to make "historical vehicle" registration for show (aka parade) cars only.

Re: Warren’s Conversion - Engine Bay

I got several things done in the engine bay today. ?First, mounted the RMW stainless bracket for their aluminum coolant tank. ?I mounted it approximately 1/2 inch below the tab as recommended.
?
?
Then I connected the silicone hoses to the coolant pipes that run from the front, with the longer of the two on the inside pipe. ?I’m not sure whether there are any additional changes to make the the hoses running front to rear. ?RMW’s instructions make reference to switching heater hoses around, but it’s unclear whether that only applies to syncros or whether it also applies to 2WD Vanagons. ?I have a call in to RMW for clarification. ?Hopefully I’ll learn something tomorrow.
?
?
A little progress every day.

Good call. I’ve read that the braided flat ground straps are best. I’ll try to locate several (extra intake ground as well).?

Run a ground strap from the alternator and the starter ground to the chassis while you're at it.

Wayne, thanks for the link. But in that thread, if the ECU was constantly rebooting, then the car would be bucking like hell, which it’s not. It runs real smooth.
?
It may be one of the 2 other relays (fuel pump and starter) that are next to the ECU. Luckily, I have 2 relays that I can use to replace them. I’ll update the thread after I do that tomorrow.

??????? If it is the ECU it could be a bad battery. How old is yours. Have it checked out. Try another battery.

I finally got the engine and transmission mated up last night and installed the starter today. ?What a great feeling to see those two finally together!

Likely to be a relay under there as the ecu has no moving parts unless you’re hearing electrical popping in which case you’d want to figure that out really quick I think?

Re: Warren’s Conversion - Plumbing

That black and orange connector might be what connects to your O2 sensor subharness for pre and post cat O2 sensors.

Re: Tachometer not working after fiddling with Dash Cluster

If Vw tach it has ground,12v ignition and signal wires from right to left

Re: Tachometer not working after fiddling with Dash Cluster

I think (but I’m not 100 percent certain) that the tachometer is prewired in the main harness connection so nothing extra to plug or unplug, so unless one of the pins became bent or corroded it should work. ?If you haven’t already done so, it might be worth unplugging the main connector and take a look to see if anything is amiss.

Warren’s Conversion - Plumbing

Today (after almost a week away from doing much due to a cold) I did a little work on plumbing. ?There are two heater hoses that run front to back. ?The one on the passenger side will mate up with the pipe coming off the thermostat that routes up and over the case (the lower yellow pipe pictured here).?
?
?
The other long heater hose (driver side) runs to the reversed coolant manifold but in a place that’s very difficult to get to. ?RMW even recommends attaching the hose before the engine is installed and I can see why. ?It’s tucked away under the intake manifold and under a large bundle of wiring. ?I lifted the wiring to get a visual on it. ?
?
?
While I concur with RMW that it’s simpler to attach the hose beforehand, how would you determine the appropriate length of hose to attach and ensure that it’s not dangling excessively when attempting to install the engine? ?So I cut a short piece of hose and affixed it to the port with a spring clamp.
?
?
I then used a Dorman aluminum 5/8 straight connector on the short section of hose so that, once the engine is in place, I will be able to finish the connection to the main driver side heater hose. ?I thought this would be better than trying to install the engine with three or four feet of hose getting in my way. ?

I’ve paused on my wiring for now (been sick with a cold for almost a week). ?But I look forward to getting back into it. ?My engine is from a 2003 Legacy. ?But I did manage to do a little plumbing work today (new topic).

Tachometer not working after fiddling with Dash Cluster

About 2 years ago?? 85 Vanagon with EJ22 conversion from CA Westys in San Diego got Tboned on passenger side.? To help out body Shop guy, I personally removed Dashboard.? Time elapsed, and put it all together again.? But now, no Tachometer working. Probably something bone simple, like I knocked off an important input wire.? Where should I be looking? Motor starts and runs and all idiot lights and gauges are normal, just no Tach.? (Before I drive over to CA Westys and pay $200 for them to reconnect 1 wire.)? Maybe they will do it for free....I kind of like those guys at CA Westys...I give them good press.

Re: Warren’s Conversion - Wiring Harness

What year is your engine again? OBD1 90-94 has one. OBD2 has two. I hope you got the O2 sensor subharness with the engine. Are there two plugs going into one? Two O2 sensors on your ECU pinouts (front and rear)? You have to have a second O2 sensor bung put in the cat or the exhaust pipe for the downstream. If the cat is directional with an arrow for flow the one O2 bung will be pre-cat. If not directional it can be either.
