Re: ‘05 in the hand vs the ‘04 in the bush
On both, it 6 - half a dozen decision Maybe start with what you have in hand and if? 04 drops in your lap consider the decision then Re rebuild, unless what you are putting in there has known issues, I'd say put it in as is and run it till it needs attention. Re: ‘05 in the hand vs the ‘04 in the bush
Scotty, I did much of what you propose. My Subaru engine is a 2.5L pulled from a 2005 Outback with drive by wire. The 2005 ECU from the Subaru could not be used in the Vanagon. I had the harness built for me by Busaru and when that was done an Impreza ECU was modified to go with the harness. Worked perfectly.? DRIVE BY WIRE: I solved?this problem when I decided to go with the SMALLCAR conversion kit. They offer components which make the?drive by wire conversion easy. Check their?web site. .? I had my engine rebuilt before installation. It will save you a whole lot of hassle later. I opted NOT to use SmallCars clutch disc setup. There are bigger ones out there. I have an automatic?tranny but still wanted the bigger setup. Sorry, but at the moment I can't remember the vendor, but they were one of the regulars. BTW, if you observe standard breakin procedures? on the engine you should have no problems. Make sure you change the oil and filter frequently during early stages of run-in? on regular oil then later switch to oil recommended?by the book for the engine.? Finally, I recommend SmallCars cast aluminum oil pan and their unique device for checking the oil level from the access hatch under the license plate. It is a clear flexible plastic tube that sometimes is a little fiddly but it sure beats the heck out of having to unload the rear of the van to gain access to the engine. You WILL have to do this to add oil., but not to just check your oil.? I Hope this helps. John On Sun, Oct 27, 2024 at 7:24?PM Scotty via <schlivitz=gmail.com@groups.io> wrote:

‘05 in the hand vs the ‘04 in the bush
?
I have a running ‘05 Impreza (manual transmission) that is mechanically complete but has high miles and questionable history. ?It belonged to a paddler.
I would really appreciate some input on the trouble and expense of working around the Throttle-by-Wire and immobilizer vs just getting another cheap old ‘04 or earlier Subaru 2.5L.
Also while we’re at it, is there value in doing the full installation and then removing the engine to rebuild it? ?Or should I go ahead and rebuild it and just watch my engine temperature? ?I’m gonna go through the cooling system regardless. ?But it seems like it would be less stressful if I was doing the shakedown with an engine that I’m not worried about cooking.
I kinda figure after doing the conversion, pulling the engine back out to rebuild/replace it won’t be that big of a deal. ?Except for the fact that I may not want to spend much more time up under a Vanagon.
Thanks in advance?

Re: EZ30 Wiring Harness
First post here. I’m preparing to convert my 89 Westy with a 2.5L naturally aspirated SOHC from a 2003 Legacy. I pulled the harness and it was more of a challenge for me than pulling the engine. The main harness is like a root from a big tree; a main body of wires with tendrils going here, there, and everywhere. Getting to the harness against the firewall was the hardest part for me. The donor was an automatic, so possibly more wires because of that. I’ve sent my harness to Jeff at AutoVentures for conversion. I wouldn’t even think of doing that part myself.? |
Re: EZ30 Wiring Harness
To my knowledge, Busaru, Small Cars Performance and Van Cafe offer solutions for this aspect of your project.
Mick Longley from Busaru published a very helpful series of YouTube video if you ever decide to make your own wiring system. I am actually working on this aspect of my project for a 2011 EJ25 and it is not that bad, I should say fun and a bit challenging. Take a look to Busaru web site, there is plenty of good informations there. Also, I would say that the work to complete a EZ30 wiring harness is probably very similar has what is needed for EJ20 or EJ25, same rules to follow, same logic. Bernard |
Re: EZ30 Wiring Harness
I did an EZ30 harness conversion last year. Harness was pulled from our mechanic's father's donor Subie on their back lot. Apparently, controlled? pre-deployment of the air bags was entertaining. On Sat, Oct 26, 2024, 11:22 ANDREW via <andrewvanis=gmail.com@groups.io> wrote:

Re: EZ30 Wiring Harness
Haven't done any ez30s yet but done a few 2.5.... For DIY - I'd imagine the easiest is from a complete donor.? A u pull it type yard could be another option Re carpart, even if it's not listed Id bet the sellers could provide it if you call them For all some, ready to plugin - Id call Jeff at AutoVentures in Wisconsin about having him make what you need On Sat, Oct 26, 2024, 6:04?AM Jeffrey Laudin via <jlaudin=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:

Re: List of Subaru repair vendors/shops?
开云体育Thanks John! This is great, very helpful. I confess however my feeble little tiny brain remembers a spreadsheet or maybe just a list in a word document. But no matter, this is terrific, and I will “convert” it to a handy dandy reference doc. ? I just saw the Vanalert app page, that also looks really promising, going through it now. ? THANKS!! ? Re: List of Subaru repair vendors/shops?
I have similar?issues. But not for the engine. My engine is a freshly remanufactured (major overhaul right down to the toenails) EJ25 that came out of a 2005 OUTBACK. and uses an earlier year Impreza ECM to run things and does so beautifully. Busaru built the harness using my original and adapted the ECM. So no problems so far. Now have 4000 miles on the engine.? I bought a totaled out 2005 Outback because a tree fell on it. Engine was essentially?good but relatively high mileage so I had it rebuilt.? Now my concern.? I'm in Alabama. Last month a tree, in the middle of a beautiful clear calm night, decided to attack my Carat. For reasons known only to God a tree split in half, one half falling on top of the van, completely inverting the metal top and breaking loose and dropping on the floor the whole inside?of the AC SYSTEM, front to back, breaking many of the plastic parts. The van is very drivable. Nothing there got?hurt,?but if it rains and? I drive it, I have?15 gallons of water in the?bathtub on?the roof that?goes?with?me and every time I make a stop I get my windshield?washed. Not fun if you are at a four lane?intersection or turning.?? My dilemma. i have been unable to find any body shop in Alabama who is willing to undertake repair of my vehicle. I understand. It has become a classic due to age, and an antique. Shops today do not much know how to work on these all metal vehicles. Most don't have the older mechanics that know what to do with this thing. Shops can't get body parts readily. So, I have to go out of state. And I found a shop south of Tampa Bay in Florida capable and competent to?do the job and they have the resources on site. Problem is they are 600 miles from me. Does anyone know of any other competent shop in the southeast that can repair a vanagon? The shop in Florida was just about in the center of Hurricane?Milton when it came ashore. They may have been wiped out. In any case my insurance company is kicking over the distance and cost of getting my van there and back. Any opinions there. I sure?can't drive it that?far.. I just had a major life changing surgery.? Any input on these matters is appreciated.? On Tue, Oct 15, 2024 at 5:29?PM Terry Cline via <tcline001=gmail.com@groups.io> wrote:

List of Subaru repair vendors/shops?
开云体育Hi all – I should have saved this information….didn’t. ? Some time ago (a couple, 3 months?) ago, somebody was kind enough to publish and share a list of known Subaru/Vanagon sellers, repair shops, etc.? Can anybody share this with me one more time? Was it Wayne who compiled the list….? I could be way off. ? I’m in California, Central Coast area, had the conversion done with Cesar and team at California Westys, El Cajon, Ca. He is about 6 hours away, so hoping to find some one more local. And in case you don’t know, retail store GoWesty is about 45 min from my house, but no longer has a repair shop. That said, the repair shop is still nearby, but now independent. However, they do NOT work on Subaru engines. Everything else, yes. ? My info for the sake of completeness: ? Terry Cline Paso Robles CA 805 305 7638 Vanagon: 1987 Vanagon converted to mimic a Westfalia. Pop up, cupboards, water, sink, stove, only thing now missing is the original fridge. Original VW engine converted to the Subaru 2.2L, 1990 – 1995 Legacy, in approximately Nov 2022. ? Thanks Terry |

"Also you can use two socket extensions with a prybar or long screwdriver lodged between them while you torque the bolt." This could damage the harmonic balancer.? Did when I tried it.? 开云体育Bob. ?Apologies but I don’t remember whether your van is an automatic or manual. If automatic, and you expected the kick down go get you the revs you needed (and the lower gear), and it didn’t, it might be related to adjustment of your kick down linkage? If manual, I got nothing except suspicions around a working speed sensor. Best, Brent
